Finally starting to get back into the swing of things. That was one BIATCH of a surgery.....wheeeeeoooooow! But back to bidness, slowly, but back! Doug bought this engine fron a guy up in Conn., and had it drop shipped to me, for a little freshenning up. Seems she'd been in the salt, and was a tad bit nasty, had a carb that had been siliconed every where you can imagine, in search of a vacume leak possibly. Then the previous owner shot his ownself in the foot. He, for some reason, drilled a hole in the throttle shaft vacume cover! After removing the top end, though....other than an overly wet condition, and no real tanning, even on the exhaust valve, I'd surmise this thing ran like crap, when it ran! Since we're gonna "pump it up," let's take a look at a big valve head... Exhaust, before.... Exhaust almost done... Intake and exhaust....still virginal... After severral hours of going in and out both ends of each orfices.....LOL.... Yeah, some of those ports look humonguous, and in all actallity, are fairly large. But what is next to impossible to show, especially with a cheap camera, is the shape, back cutting, bowling. Thet ain't pretty, not quite finished yet either, but there is a ryhme to the reason......5500>7500rpm is gonna be sweet Doug! And 3500>5500 is gonna be more fun than you can imagine..... More to come.

I am paying attention this this one. by big valve you are referring to the factory head meant for a 150, not the one made for a 125 which has slightly smaller valves? John

My memory is a bit rusty, but I think that is not the stock head for a 150.
We started this project discussion a few months back. I got the motor off a classified ad on SD from a member that claimed to be a minister. I was not told about any salt exposure on the motor when I bought it. The story was it was a very low mileage motor and in good mechanical condition. The seller was not able to get the scooter licensed so he was parting it out.
The motor was shipped to Kliff and he and I talked about a big bore kit, Kliff is doing a balance, port and polish on it, oh and taking a little weight off the valves. Kliff correct me if I'm not remembering correctly. I think you were going to put a hotter cam in it, the variator is going to be an over sized one. I do not recall if you were going to change the final gear ratio or if you had not found one that would fit it. Kliff is also playing with the carb a bit.
When it gets out to the land of fruits and flakes, I'm finding a donor scooter to put it in.

Yup, that is a true biggie valve head, bigger than the OEM 150. and the valves will be lightenned, semi-tulipped, and swirl polished to accelerate gas flow, int or exh. A new intake will be port matched, and the carb will be detailed (posted here in a day or so) with a few mods most of the Scooter community doesn't seem to be using, but have worked for me all the way up to 44mm CV's. So I'll do a proportion size change, and see where we are. The intake will be port matched too.
Gonna use a 59mm Akunar kit for the piston and cylinder, A-9 cam, stock, but new rockers, Bando coil, Iridium plug, recommend a STOCK CDI, 115mm Prodigy Variator, 14-15gr Dr Pulley sliders...and a few mods in the clutch......
Should be a sweet engine, easily turning 7500-8K with the larger Variator,(that's why the stock CDI is recommended), and might even benefit from a 2.90>2.85:1 final gear change. Any taller than 2.85 may lug the engine, and lead to over heating. But I'd break it in for a good 750-1000 miles before contemplating a gear change on top of the variator.

In its former life, this engine and carb belonged to me. It was part of a Konced T-11 and I had it dropped shipped to me from a distributor in May of 2008. Kliff is right in saying the engine always ran like crap. I adjusted the valves because it was difficult to keep running at idle. Didn't help, so a lot of silicone was used to track down any possible hose leaks. (complete pdi done when I purchased the bike) It ran rich without much improvement for 600 miles. For those wondering, the head is the original head that came with this engine from Konced. I did no engine modifications and the innards should be fairly clean. As far as salt on the outside of the engine case, this may have begun before the bike even left China. It was tarnished, but I will admit to a few around town rides when there was some salt on the dry pavement last winter. I had no intention of selling Doug or Kliff a problem engine, and I am hopeful that Kliff can make it purr and even snarl a little bit when pushed.

No problem, and I am not concerned about the motor or the condition. In my book, when you buy something used and unseen you have to expect things to be as they are. On top of that I knew it was getting a total rebuild so any problems would be taken care of in the end.

ya never know what your gonna get in a used engine , the "150 i bought off craigs list was full of surprises, first off got it home checked the numbers and it turned out to be a vento branded 125 not 150 and was a 153qmi which left a lot of headscratching and wtf is a 153qmi's , then pulled off the magneto and yup 6 coil stator so that had to go (anyone have a use for a 6 coil and flywheel in unknown condition?) then swapped out rollers then flipped it over to change out the exaust studs and after about 2 mins bein upside down it literally started pee'in on my leg .........there was about half a gallon of water in the block , aparently it was stored outside in the weather with no cover and no carb and the crankcase filled with what would become stagnent water , so i dumped as much water out as i could again about half a gallon , rotated the engine to ensure it was all movin freely then stareted it up and let it run just long enough to get warm , shut it off changed the oil (which looked like thick capucinno btw) and surprise no filter screen or spring, so put one of those in too ...ran the engine up to full operating temp , changed oil cleaned filter again . ran another 150 miles for testing , now im gonna change it again , but the booger runssssssss greaaaaaaat , but after knowing all that.......... i still think its worth the $100 i paid for it

Back to Cuz duggies engine.... as I'm getting back on 2 feet, I'm spreading the work around, Doug's carb and manifold have been on the table for a day or so now... Doug...... you OWE me.....LOL! I had 2 good carbs I've been holding back, just soething about the name Mikuni.....just gives me goose bumps. Well check this out. The 24mm Jianxiang carb I'm swapping out.....ain't even 24mm !!! More like 23.9 BUT.....the MIKUNI is a whopping 24.5 + or -.....dammit! At least my reserve Mki is 24.5 too. Jetting is set p with a 37/120, an extra .020 shim under the needle(which is ALSO adjustable) and I incresed the smaller slide vacume hole to match the larger, and chamferred them with a #1 centerring bit.... now I could tell y'all the size of them thar holes......but then you'd start knowing almost as much as I do.....same for WHY I did that.....trust me. Wait'll you see the intake port and manifold match Doug..... super Classified, using an OEM manifold, high temp plastics, 600F JB Weld..... this is one custom intake and porting job.... So far, manifold, ports, valves, springs....23+ hours. This is gonna be sweeeeeeeet! We were about half way home here.... I could post the finished pics, but Dougie might wanna see this up close and personal, before any finalized pics are posted...

Thanks for posting this, yes I'd like to see it as it progresses.
BTW, I have a line on a new in the crate 2007 150cc Tank that was slightly damaged in shipping to a local dealer I know. It is not a body style I like much but would make a good candidate for a stripped down scooter similar in design to the MAXX. now I said it was brand new in the case, but it is actually still in the angle iron frame. The dealer got it when he first started his business and has used it as a training tool, he is now willing to let it go for a "good" price so he says. This just might be the home for the motor you are building.
