Worked fine Phil. That radiator looks to have a pretty descent fan on it.

Took a few more photos today but I dropped my cheapo camera and now I can't get to them Continueing the PDI, I found no loose, stripped or missing hardware, all the speed nuts are stainless and everything was tight. Plastics were fairly easy to remove without damage. The cooling system hoses are actually in pretty good shape. Firm and flexible with no signs of cracking or brittleness, if this was a car I wouldn't think twice about using them. No radiator up front, what's in the photo is all there is and yes the fan is almost twice as wide as the radiator but only half as tall - not a real efficient design. All the electrical connections look good and tight. There are a couple of components hanging loose that were mounted with double-faced tape. Dual halogen headlights (BA20D base) and the sockets are 3 claw and easily converted to a H4 bulb. The CVT cover is easy to remove with only 3 bolts. Not a lot of grease in the variator but what is there is thick. Rollers are 15 grams and the metal centers have a thin edge of metal that needs to be removed. The belt is a Gates Powerlink but has no size or part no on it. It measures 940 mm around the outside and 22.5mm wide. The frame looks good, no rust anywhere and all the welds look good. No pollution equipment at all - 1 vacuum hose to the petcock and Ts off to the carb. Overall it doesn't look like to cheap a build. The battery, spark plug and fuel filter are typical chinese but everything else looks decent. Other than that off the wall radiator setup and odd sized belt I think it'll be OK

does the fan push or pull air?
Fans on cars that are behind the radiator pull air through it, most have a shroud that makes a channel for the air to be pulled through on all corners of the radiator. If you have a fan that pulls air, you might consider fabricating a shroud for the radiator.

after looking at your photo, looks like a shroud might not help, it looks like the fan is in front of the radiator, is that correct?

Yeah, the radiator is in front. I'm going to let it be for now. No sense creating a problem where no problem exists (yet!). Have a few more things to check out, need to replace all fluids and start putting it back together. I was going to work on it Sun morning but I overslept, by the time I was up and around it was already 97 degrees outside.

Got the scooter back together and rode it to work Wed and Fri and I LIKE it. Not quite as nimble as the Carino but it will hit 45 will the Carino is still looking for 35. 2 things I missed during the PDI: 1. the front brake line runs right next to the fender with no support - I now have a hole in the brake line. 2. the bottom of the gas tank is about 30 degrees above horizontal and the petcock was pointed up - ran out of gas and still had enough gas for another 40 miles.
It's OK to screw-up as long as you learn something from it. Other than that no problems so far. Engine runs fine up to 60 gps with no sign of overheating or fan problems. Still can't get the pics off the SD disk, I may have to spring for a new camera.

Good news, no over heating!
go down to your local Walmart, Target, or electronics place, Office Depot, Staples ect. and get a USB card reader that an SD card will slip into. Your computer will think it is just another drive and you can open it up to get the pictures.

I have card readers on both computers - no go. It says to format disk before use and gets an error when you try to format. BUT I just found the usb cord for the camera and uploaded the photos to M3 album

Turned over 400 miles last nite and the fan isn't working. I don't think it overheated because I'm running 40-45mph mostly. I'll take a look at it as soon as there's some shade to work in. I may wire up a manual switch temporarily. As for the scooter itself, its running very nicely, the ride is similar to the Carino (on steroids) but the M3 seems to handle bumps a little better. I don't know if that's because of the suspension or the 13" rims. I had it up to 60 gps briefly with no problems. The rear brake switch is out and it looks like someone spilled brake fluid on it. It's kinda oily and paint on the brake handle is peeling. That would also explain the broken turn signal mount directly under the brake handle. Brake fluid does strange things to ABS. I ordered a brake switch, brake hose and 18g rollers from Scrappydog and they should be here Sat. Rebel; no CARB stick just the usual EPA/DOT stuff.

Thanks, that is good to know. I sent the seller a message on EBay asking, the response was yes. Perhaps the person answering just didn't know what I was asking about. I'd be very cautious about buying one for California use.

What is the combination of larg hose and tubing running from the engine to the front of the scooter beneath the frame? That picture with the bodywork off lights my candle. Just add a seat and floorboard, take off the fairing on the handle bar, clean up the plumbing a bit and it would be one hot minimalist scoot.
