they do make a high temp silicone/rtv, seems like if it is running tht hot though you need to find out why. Is the shield all in place, no obstructions for the fan?

The valve cover shouldn't be hot?? IIRC my valve cover has always been hot to the touch after running more than 5 minutes... All my shrouds have been on since before the first start on the new engine. They've come off for trying to find leaks, but on before I start ever since Kliff's admonishments.. I can see and feel the air coming out of the shroud vents... But, it got worse today.
I put about 1/5th of a stick of oil in this morning, like 1/4 second worth of pouring... It started a little hard, but got going, so I went 100 yards for some gas, started up good, and popped on the other side of the stoplight. Pulled over, it wouldn't restart. Just whirrs like there's no sparkplug in it. I haven't opened it up yet, just got back home, and I'm too mad. Any ideas?
I'm thinking I've dropped another valve seat. off the top of my head, but you see how much I know, so I thought I'd check to see if you have an idea what to expect or check when I calm down?

The valve cover is going to be hot to the touch. But not red hot. So how much oil has it used in what distance? I don't like the sound of adding oil made the compression better though.

It's not been red hot... Just, like you said, hot to the touch.
I just pulled everything apart, and discovered a blown head gasket. I bought the 1p57 gasket set from PFS, which had a kinda hard blasck plasticky head gasket with a metal ring for the cylinder head... About 1/4 inch of the ring looks melted off, along with a triangle of the black material spreading out from there to the edge. Explains no compression, I hope. But, you're right, I need to figure out why I'm running so hot. I also need to grab another intake manifold O-Ring. My old one was crushed when I pulled it off the first time (when I rebuilt the engine - I'd alwars just removed the carb from the manifold for adjustments). I replaced it with a white ring in the gasket set, but that's not the right size, I need to find that measurement and pick one up tomorrow from autozone or somewhere. Along with 2 head bolts. I broke one using a 10 lb min torque wrench and not being used to such a long handle... ::sigh::
Possibly, hopefully, these things add up to all my problems, but somehow I don't think it will... Trying to stay hopeful, though... Adding oil didn't make the compression better, it just made the level better, lol... It seems like about the right amount for the leak spraying I've been having. I had to cut a little corner out of the PFS lower engine shroud to go around the PAIR port, and that's where my oil has been spraying out. Large part of the reason I sealed the PAIR in hopes that would stop the leak, but no such luck...
I had some deposits on the bottom of my piston, right next to where the head gasket blew, it might be carbon, or it might be the gasket material, I couldn't tell which. It was on my head and exhaust port, too, so I scrubbed all that down with some gas and a wire brush. I tried nylon first, but that wouldn't do it, so I switch to brass, hope I didn't scratch holes in my seat, but I didn't /see/ any... I haven't tried starting tonight, trying to give the gasket sealant some time to set, and hoping some prayer tonight might help, too, lol... And that maybe someone might have some suggestions on other possible causes.

you put it back together with a bad head gasket??? not a good idea to re-use a head gasket even if it was not blown.
