i got an idea lastnight for a cheap oil temp gauge , a standard cheap automotive water temp gauge reads close to 300 degrees like 275 or something right why not adapt one to screw into the oil drain plug on the side of the case and put the gauge in or on the dash somewhere ? what yall think?would it work?

if it will fit I see no problem, it has been years since I installed one of those but it seems that the sending unit for the gauge back then was a bit large, it might not fit the hole, check that out before you spend money on it.

luckily i got a old junk block i can split the case and look into drilling and tapping into and checking for interferance etc i thought of several possible locations i could use such as the drain plug the filter housing possible even the drill and tap the side of the case itself im just not sure if the electric or mechanical gauge would be best if i run the mechanical id have to instal it on the dashpanel near the glove box cuz they dont like to be twisting back and forth around the steering column electric could be mounted anywhere.

Need, well in the strict sense of the word, no.
Sometimes you have needs to push the envelope and if you are taking your GY6 to limits it was not originally designed for, a need might be there. Running high oil temperature can break the oil down and you motor will suffer from that. Being able to see if you are running hot oil gives you information, tells you that you might be running too lean of an air/fuel mixture. If you live in hotter climates like in Arizona where the temperatures are well above 100 degrees for months on end, your air cooled motor can be burning its oil, especially when you are stopped at a stop light. And it is just kind of neat.

Oil temp gauges have been used on Harleys for years, and I agree with Rebel no you don't need it, but if you are modifying and running high RPMS it would be nice to know if the oil is getting to hot.
Kinda like and oil pressure light, when it comes on it is too late, an oil pressure gauge gives you constant readings and you can tell if a potential problem is there before things go BOOM.

it comes with one and its electric ....i think depending on its size it will either go into the oil filter housing or i will make a new dipstick and cap out of it

Kingstarscooters on eBay has a dipstick with oil-temp gauge built in for less than $20. I got my CDI from them, and was very pleased with their product and service. I will be getting one of these dipstick/temp gauges when I save up a few more pennies...
