Thanks for doing this Kliff. After one buys the new $37 springs from you Kliff, is it a relatively easy plug/play install on an otherwise stock setup? I always feel like I'm asking stupid questions to you guys... I consider it easy, like Doug said, remove the head, pull the springs qith a compressor, re-lap the valves while you got it apart, do a little "bowl work," rehape the ports, match the intake manifold.....then put it all back together. But at least, lap the valves while you have the chance. Air cooled engines are hard on valve seats and faces.....if it's apart, lap 'em. I've got one completed set on hand right now. Thought Doug in SD wanted them, and was gonna PP me, so I could have shipped them yesterday. But as of yet, no PP. So tomorrow, I'm gonna put 2 more sets together, and I have materials coming for 3 more sets. But by 4;00pm tomorrow, I should have 3 sets ready to go. Another dumb question, what does it mean "to lap" something? Special tools required? Hey Doug, how many six packs would it take to bribe you into helping me You're within my scooting radius.

You are talking Doug in SD aren't you?
to lap the valves, you go down to the local friendly auto parts store and get a hand lapping kit, it will have some paste that has a grit to it, and a little wooden handle with a suction cup on the end of it. After the head is removed, and the valve springs are taken off, you put a little lapping compound on the valve or valve seat, slip the valve back into the hole it cam out of and use the handle to rotate the valve, this will clean up the surface the valve makes a seal on to improve compression, cleaning it of carbon deposits.

Ok, watched some youtube on "lapping" valves. Apparently it is done to ensure a nice tight seal. In the videos I watched, the guys had a suction cup valve lapping tool, I assume that is something cheap that I can pick up locally.
The only part of removing the head that I am questionable on is replacing the head gasket. Is there a step by step somewhere for that? I've heard of people coating their head gasket with other substances, I don't know really, just thinking out loud.

I'm a Doug too, several of the guys know that, I just don't put it in my sig.
But hey, you are welcome to ride it up here and we can tear into it, just quite a bit further than San Diego for you.

Marine, I think they all got you covered, about what valve spring installation involves, including lapping the valves. Anything I try to interject at this point would be redundant, and possibly confusing. As for gasket treatment, if I get a fiber style gasket, with a metal fire ring around the cylinder hole, and a silicone appearing substance around all the other holes, I do NOTHING to the gasket. If I use a solid metal shim style gasket, I spray several light coats of "Copper Coat" gasket finish, on both sides. Hang it, and let it dry, minimum 6 hours....yeah, I know the can says less, and I really prefer to spray them about 24+ hours before I need them. Just an old habit from when I was building blown alky Hemis, or drag boats.....many moon ago. Seems we had less gasket failure with aged, Copper Coated gaskets... maybe just luck or coincidence.....but I still like 24+ hours....LOL

Hey Kliff,
Where do you buy your head gaskets? I see the typical fiber ones sold everywhere, but I rather get the quality one with the metal ring that you described... I need to limit my variables when I do this the first time.

Dumb question -
I just put a new gasket in about a week ago. When I swap out the springs and cam, do I need to put another new gasket in?
I used the black one with the red rim around the side.
