I was looking thru the opening at top with the handle bars off and I saw a loose bolt. it turns out it was one of three in the ignition/steering lock. all of the 3 bolts had buggered threads. I have all the plastic off it at the moment. the steering lock and position of steering head were not aligned, so they just tried to wind them in. I am going to retap to 1/4 20 since I have the tap, the rear brake was non existant so I started bleeding it and it is coming around, had to break for supper. I think since I have so much off I will loosen up the steering head and see that it is lubed since I got the room now.
I will have to make a call to GS in the morning. I paid for a color matched trunk and I got black with a red scooter! no scratches at all other than back of front fender where the cable tie wire rubbed from not being squashed down. That is one sharp looking scoot. I think I will change oil and get it running right before I attempt to replace all that plastic....that is going to be one big job. John

got it all put back together today, fresh oil fuel filter etc. I left all the hoses as I wanted to have some thing to reference preformance to. I rode it 2 miles on my dirt road. I am not impressed with it so far. comparing with my 26 year old yamaha riva it has very little power. the shocks are almost non existant super harsh ride. the plastic is extremely flimsy. doubt if it would survive a stand still fall over. in the next few days I am going to wack the muffler off, have already picked up a brigs muffler to weld on the end of the pipe. all the damn hoses are going bye bye. just a ton of pcv stuff on it. will see if I can find a foam dirt bike air cleaner locally, the in side of carb is 1 3/4 od. I tapped the ign./steering lock to 1/4-20. 2 of the 3 holes line up with welded nuts, the top one is welded in the wrong place! 2 good ones is better than what they had there. have some pictures but will get more. This has dual shocks in rear unlike some gy6 scoots and am sure the spring from one would be sufficient I am no light weight but seems like the springs would be good for 1000 lbs!!!! the front hardly moves at all too with weight aplied. And I did some voltage checks and find the the lights are dc and come on with the ign switch, so led's will work just find with no mods to wiring. John

I recently got a Carino and a Capri. I just finished complete PDI's on both this past weekend. I took them for their initial rides and found the Capri definatly had more of a kick in the pants feel while accelerating. I never got either one over 35-40 mph due to speed limits. Now, I am pushing the 300lb mark on the scale, but the Carino doesn't even flinch at this while the Capri let the front tire rub a hole right through the front wheel fairing due to the weaker suspension. I wish I could combine the two for the perfect scoot for me or at least figure out how to get some more pep out of the Carino. I'll be very interested to see what mods you try and their results.

John Unfortunately, most GY6 scoots don't fare well, in a side by side performance comparison to an "ole faithful Honda scoot." But it will get better. My Tracer, didn't feel like it was "weened," and finally broken in, till just shy of 2000 miles. My break-in method is more the ride it, like you're gonna ride it, rather than the ride it like you stole it, or ride it like" you're fraid it might get dirty," either. My dailey commute to Dad's encompassed up hill, down hill, sto & go, flat level and stright for a couple of 1.5-2.5 mile stretches, and some twisties.... 19 miles, twice a day. Unless I go on additional errands, or just plain riding. 'd fill her up, every 2 days, and at the beginning of the ride EACH day, it was better, faster, more comfy. Rear shocks....one blew a seal around 300 miles and was warrantied. BOTH rear shocks started levelling out at about 700 miles. Front forks, about 1000 miles, I noticed I wasn't flinching every time I saw a pebble on the road.... this baby was starting to work, front and back. Speed and torque....what speed and torque.... I put a tach on right out of the box. Where were all these 7000+ rpms everyone was talking about 6400 on a cool morning.....5800 that same day, in the afternoon. But better, every day....noticeably. Be sure to adjust the valves! Mine were .002" Int...less than that on the exhaust. .004"int, .006"ex...BIG Differeence! Checkm and adjust again at 1000 miles. That first 1000 miles was a dailey performance revelation...do the PDI, Adjust the valves, CHANGE the oils....that stuff in 'em is shipping lube....loose it! DIRT ROADS....USE the air box, but if you are UNI or K&N bound, be prepared to clean the filter almost daily, and don't forget to re-jet. I'd get her broken in stock first though, see what you've got, before you start changing. Changes made under 1000 miles, inho, are simply superfluous searches for poer that will be there in the next couple of hundred miles anyway. Don't condemn it after a single day man....break it in! Some of your other problems I don't understand, just cant visualize. But remember....CALL JOHN

Kliff,
Now I have less than 10 miles total on my Carino after doing a very thorough PDI. Would you still suggest waiting until 1000 mi. to drill out the exhaust and re-jet the carb? How do you know where to start when you re-jet? How do you know what you already have? I did not take the carb apart during the PDI, but I would guess the size is stamped on the jet? Where can you get new jets that you know will work in your carb?
I want to get another scooter to tinker on and learn things on while I keep my Carino driveable and rack up some miles. This is getting fun/interesting. I wish there were some good articles/threads somewhere on these mods with pictures. Thanks.

This is getting fun/interesting. I wish there were some good articles/threads somewhere on these mods with pictures. Thanks. 99% of our CV carbs will have a 35 or smaller pilot jet, an s a105 0r 107 intake. When venting the intake, IF yours is the same triangular shape as mine under the seat, and drilling the pipe as I've already described, IF you are at 1000asl or LESS, a 36 pilot, and a 110 main, works out pretty well. Enviromoto.com can help you out with these. Or if you feel comfy drilling your own, I can get you the drill sizes tommorrow, and a link wher to order. All those notes are in pen & ink, out at Dad's, I'll be there tomorrow. Just remember, the airbox, muffler, and jet combo, I developped as a package. It works together, don't short-cut, or explore new territories, and expect it to work.....it will, but it may take a differnt main, or some additional tuning. Carbs are "hand's on," NOT "plug N play." And not trying to be asinine, but you ask how I know where to start when rejetting....reading plugs, smelling exhaust, feeling throttle response....40+ years, that can't be written down or described....just second nature.

2 miles on it. I just pulled off all the extra vacuum lines and plugged the extra ones. the carb has one other port that looks like a vent off the top of the float bowl, I suppose leave a little hose on it so as not to upset the apple cart. a hose also goes to the gear box and I assume it is also a vent. what would happen if I just leave some hose on the vent on top of the valve cover a little higher than the cover it self. just allow it to vent to atmosphere like motors in days of old. Have a foam filter for the carb, says to oil it. I just got done cutting off the muffler and bored out a 3/4 coupling so just one end slides over pipe. then welded it and a bracket to end of pipe. a briggs muffler now screws in and have a stainless set screw to lock the threads. a new muffler can be added easily. will have pictures, is a rather neat looking instalation. motor revs easier. ia a bit on the loud side, but I have all the harleys for my defense. and it is a bonified lawnmower muffler. drilling main jet is next. as you will see I live on a "dust" road 2.2 to 2.5 miles of it depending on which way I go out for the blacktop. once I hit blacktop it rides good, but on this road it sure pounds your hemroids down. never ever rodeany thing so rough riding and so smooth on pavement. I am starting to like it real well. John
