New to the forum and just got this scooter yesterday with a 139qmb engine, not all that familiar with this type of motor. I usually work on 2 stroke hondas like the Spree and elite but I couldnt pass up a deal on a 4 stroke PO tried to adjust the valves so i had to make sure they were within spec and get everything back together, finally got it running. As the PO stated it would spit and sputter and lose power after 1/2 throttle. It lacks hardly any power at all especially from a stand still once it is rolling it pickups up a little but it just seems sluggish and doesnt want to take the throttle. I am thinking A. something with the variator or clutch or B. the bystarter. It cranks easy with the electric and kick and idles great. Any suggestions? Attachments:

Welcome. The scooter looks nice.
Did the scooter sit for a while? These do need the valves adjusted often so I'd double check the lash on those. The bystarter might be the issue, have you done a plug read? The variator/clutch are pretty easy to check out but if it does not have a lot of miles on it I'd save that for last. If you have not found them I have a link in my sig line to some manuals you might want to download.

Thanks for the reply guys, I found a gy6 manual but i think it is for 150s and it isnt very detailed. The PO took out the emissions bottle so I dont know how that hooks up with all the hoses and the airbox is busted where the boot to carb sticks into it so for now I have a k&n pod on there till I can repair/replace the airbox. Dont know how long it sat. Already took the side cover off to get at the vari and clutch but i cant get the vari nut off so I took a break till I can hunt down an impact. After inspection I will move to the carb, clean it real good and do a resistance check on the bystarter. Valves are set to .05 with a feeler.

well it wont do you any good till you get an iar box or you rejet that carb to run with the open filter
the fubared air box may have been the issue all along as you may be leaning out and starting to over heat

good point jmk, I am going to try to use some epoxy to fix the airbox before i purchase one. Got the vari and clutch off and everything looks good no wear on the 6.6g rollers. Tomorrow I will inspect and clean the carb, I may have some jets that will fit not sure just yet. I didnt think it would make THAT much of a different since it still has the stock exhaust as far as the jetting

Almost done cleaning the carb I noticed the main needle has the clip 1 down from the middle position which I find strange since all the factory settings i have seen the clip is always in the middle. Gonna try the clip in the middle and see what happens still gotta test the bystarter but everything else appears to be good including the intake manifold. main jet 84 idle jet 30 I really dislike CV carbs lol --actually 4 notches so there is no middle i still moved it up 1 to see what happens. also just tested the bystarter not too good with a multitester but at x10 ohms i got a reading of 0.5 so I am thinking the bystarter is bad?? since it is supposed to be 5 ohms

Moving the needle up one will lean it outa bit.
If you apply power to the bystarter does it move?

No I havent stuck it to a battery yet but i did put the bystarter off my spree with elite stock motor just had to swap the yellow and green wire around in the housing so the colors matched on the Robot harness. It took a minute to pickup gas from the tank which is almost on empty and it seemed to respond lots better to the throttle. Just gotta go get some fresh gas and change the oil then I am gonna take her for a spin. If it does well I am going to move the needle clip back down one to richen her up and see what that does. pretty good for 75 dollars and only 2 leisurely days to work on it

So were you wearing a mask when you stole it?
Just kidding, sounds like you did well. I'd suggest putting some 4.5 or 5 gram weights in the variator, you'll be much happier with its performance.

So far so good no real stummbles on the throttle must have been the bystarter Though it does lack take off power and havent really gotten to top speed but I doubt it will do anything over 30mph. I imagine my lack of power at take off especially is due to the k and n pod filter and a 30 pilot jet so I definately need to find a larger pilot or fix the airbox. I am about to take it for a few mile loop to see how it does. You think 5g weights will help me with the take off?? I have some i got with my prodigy vari on the elite. Speaking of which so far this scooter reminds me of a stock Spree

Took her for about 7 miles round 30ish mph give or take but sluggish on hills and from a stop and slight power loss on the top end due to the pod filter. I have the airbox all permatexed up waiting to dry so maybe that will give me back some power. Will wait to see before i swap in the 5g weights. The fuel sensor wasnt showing full so i took it out and the float was all broken so i need a new one or figure out how to put a float on it. Now i gotta figure out why the rpm guage isnt working And no I stole this the old fashioned way....capitalism O.o I love when people tear stuff up and instead of fixing it they go buy something new and practically give me stuff for a little of nothing

Lighter weights will let it spinhigher and you'll see an improvement all the way around.
