That is not a good sign. You may also have a messed up crank journal. So you have come this far, now it has to come all apart and cleaned and inspected. The only other alternative is to find another motor to put back in it. BTW this means you had an oil related failure. Could be the pump stopped working since I'm sure you never ran it out of oil. Had to look-up "crank journal" ;D . It was full of oil that morning but it was using a little oil and I don't know what the previous owners did. Still not sure what I'm going to do yet but I will finish breaking down the engine. Need a flywheel puller and a socket for the starter.

Phil, I have the starter socket. Aren't you in Nashville? I can mail it to you in a day. I just need it back when you finish. Can't you just use any puller to push the crank out? Appropriate size that is.

RocketdogI appreciate the offer but I'll be working on the engine as time and weather (heat index 108 today) allow, don't know when or how long. Scrappydog has the puller and socket at $20@. If it comes to it, I can remove the nut with a punch and replace it for $3. I ordered a replacement engine today to get the scooter on the road but I have this serious urge to "hotrod" a GY6 so I may as well build it, blow it up and get it out of my system

Got the new engine today. $302.21 delivered from T-Motorsports and yes it's a "cheater" engine. The number on the case is HD1P39QMB, it even has "50cc" engraved on the valve cover. I need to swap the axles, compare the stators and check the rollers and just generally look it over. It will probably have to wait till Thursday. With any luck, it will be on the road this weekend.

No, but the engine/carton are mis-marked. I doubt it's an accident so maybe they're trying to get around some import restriction or whatever. Someone on another forum was upset about the markings but later said the engine ran as good/better the his original 150. I imagine that's why someone called it a cheater, you could try to pass it off as a "50" to avoid the tags, insurance etc...

The price included a PD24J carb, regulator/rectifier, coil w/boot, starter solenoid and a piece I haven't identified yet. Probably "standard" quality parts but a spare is a spare. As easy as it is to remove/install these engines, a spare engine might be better than another scooter. They don't take up much room and don't require tags, insurance and so on.

Well, the stators are both 8 pole and the plug and pinout matches so that should work alright. I pulled the old axle (short) and checked the gearing (3:1 or 13/39). I can only work for 10-15 minutes at a time, heat index at 9 AM was 100 degrees and calm (figures yesterday winds were 10-15) Now to put the axle and brakes on the new engine.

Here is hoping for a cool down for you.
We get 100 degree weather on a regular basis, where I grew up 100 was considered a cool day, as it got up to 120 there fairly often.
I've been in places that have high humidity and at 100 you "sweat like a pig" as the sayings go. All that sweating makes you more miserable than the actual temperature in my opinion.

Yeah, actual temp is 90 but the humidity drives the heat index up (110 right now) but I'm in the shade with a light breeze and taking it easy.
