I bought a Lance Charming 50cc that wouldn't start and after playing with the carburetor to get it going I finally changed the spark plug. Voila it started! After running for a minute it developed a slight miss and stalled. It wouldn't restart. I put in a new plug and it started and ran fine as long as I kept the revs up. As soon as I let them drop off it would missfire and die, needing a new plug. I finally set the idle just high enough to keep it from missing but not so much that the wheel spun too fast. I took it for a ride and had to do a slow speed turn and it started missing but got me home OK. I shut it off but it wouldn't restart. I'm out of plugs for the moment, but I'll bet with a new one it starts right up.
OK, why is it blowing plugs. When I check for spark with a blown plug it gives me a healthy blue spark but it doesn't work in the engine.

Here's a wild shot in the dark. It starts cold with a new plug. Once it gets warm there is a compression leak. Cracked head, bad head gasket? Or it's developing a vacuum leak for the same reason. Something gets warm in the intake and then expands to leak. Perhaps a bad coil? I've seen cracked coils work fine until they get hot. Then they break down. Try the coil first.

Is the plug fouled, black, wet? Is it smoking?? Not sure I'm in total agreement about the coil or compression. If it was a compression leak after warming up, I would think it wouldn't need a new plug, just let it cool off. I'm wondering if something is going haywire in the CDI. Id be tempted to just replace the CDI and give it a try. If that didn't help do the coil or just do them both. You could warm it up and do a compression test, a comparison of a cold and warmed up one.

"You could warm it up and do a compression test, a comparison of a cold and warmed up one". There's a good idea. And so is the CDI. It's ok Rebel. If I were right all the time there would be no living with me. RD

Well, I don't know if I'm right at all, just tossing out ideas.

It's running. Give the CDI brigade a round of applause.
In short I tugged on the plug leading into the CDI and it wouldn't start with a new NGK plug. I grabbed the thing and jiggled and pushed it harder and it fired right up. That was yesterday. This morning it started right up. I can't figure out how to get the clips to release or how to pull the plug all the way out or I would and spray in contact cleaner. As it is it starts at a high idle and settles right down. The one tappet I adjusted is a little clacky but I'm leaving it alone. Exhaust valves close up anyway sooner or later.
I'm thinking it's because this guy left it outside all the time and the wiring to the CDI crudded up. I want to take it on a good five mile run before I put the plastic back on. I also put additional tie wraps on the CDI to keep it from flaping around. It was moving around pretty good on the frame.

You think the corrosion is causing the plug to stick? Can you spray a little WD-40 into where the wires enter the male plug? Won't hurt anything and it might help.

Great, I'm glad you got it running. I'd work on that connection though because it will do it again.

I put it back together and did an eight mile ride on it. I'm thinking I'm going to sell it but I have to go to DMV and see about the paperwork. It's from Maine and they don't do titles on 50cc scooters. I have the original MCO and an expired registration. The owner signed the reg in the sellers box but I have to see what I have to do in this State to make it all legit.

you should go to the state of mains dmv website and see if you can get a copy of where it says no titles it will make it easier i have used broadway title services in the past and main was one of the states they used i dont have the copy of the paper work that they sent with that said the registration was just as good as a title but all it was was a copy of the law from main about titles and older vehciles

What a crazy State. According to their site they don't even title bikes under 300cc. So there are a bunch of Rebels, Ninjas and Chinese scooters without titles in that place.

I have to drag it into the basement or somewhere warm. I'm fairly convinced it's the CDI now. The other day I had it out for a ride and I bounced it off the centerstand and it crapped out and wouldn't restart. I then punched the fender where I know the CDI is leaning in close proximity and it fired right up. Either the plug is gummed up or the CDI is goofed up. I've seen CDIs for $13.00 so it won't be a big expense to test. It has two wires, three wires so it's AC. Here's a picture of my expensive beast.

Odds on favorite is the CDI, they go faster than just about anything else.
