totti51091, aka: Ross had a slight disfugiality with some millium olde erroded mountain, spread upon some modern day tarmac, while performing a heading change.... In other words, Ross hit some sand in a turn, and busted his but... Not bad, though he has now joined the "Busted Wings Club." Scooter took a little more damage than Ross though... Trunk....way GONE! Fork legs and sliderfs are A-OK.... less than .010" run-out in the lathe...this is a GOOD THING! BUT,,,,the steering stem.....that's another matter..... the left support bent backrads about 1/2 inch....owwwwiiiiiieeeeee. So, other than a little road rash, and some bent and broken parts, looks like all will be healing soon. Waiting on parts confirmation now from GSMW, Ross is already picking at the scabs, my new lift gets broken in.... CHARGE!

It's possible Doug, but for now, I'll throw a new stem in there. then tis winter I'll straighten the bent one, magna-flux check for cracks, and if OK, have it either Cryo or heat treated after surface hardenning with a shot peening. Then the kid will have asuper duty spare, almost guaranteed not to bend again....but then the fork legs or the frame will have to absorb impacts like that.....hmmmmmm, maybe straighten, check, and leave soft....I hate bent frames!

I'm glad Ross is alright Kliff. Scooters are easier to fix and less painful.

I remember a while bakc on SD, some folks were saying that bent steering stems were rare on our scoots. Telling people that suspected bent stems to look elsewhere. I crashed once, bent my steering stem. A friend's GF crashed at a couple MPH on grass, bent steering stem. Here's another example. Those folks must have way different setups than us.
Glad no one is seriously injured.

The stems appear to be soft. But something has to absorb the energy exerted on the forks under certain circumstances... the legs, tubes, stem, or frame.... I'd rather change stems all day long, than frames.... Gotta have a fuse, looks to me like every front end impact I've seen, has involved a stem. Thought about trying to toughen it up, and just might for a race bike, but for the street, I'll leave well enough alone.
