Used Bali 150cc, unknown history. Keeps breaking belts, clutch extremely hard to compress with hands. Problem is clutch nut is stuck and rounded off to some degree. Any suggestions for getting it loose? Already tried strap wrench and impact. This is for a desperate kid who contacted me on my site and I don't know quite what to tell him at this point. Thanks, Rich

if you have a stuck nut, sometimes you have to use a torch to heat it up to get it off. Since it is rounded off, you can try using a chisel and finding a spot it can dig into then give it some good whacks, it just might loosen it. Liberal quantities of penetrating oil won't hurt. If all else fails, cutting it off is a last resort. You can buy nut splitters, but that might get expensive another option is to just use a hack saw or even a grinder to get it down close to gone without damaging the threads. Sounds like it might need a new variator to me.

Sounds right to me Rebel. If the chisel doesn't work use a dremel with a cut off blade to weaken it. Not all the way to the threads. And then wack it sideways with a chisel.

Just asking for myself in the future, might vice-grips help in that situation?

Just asking for myself in the future, might vice-grips help in that situation? Some times. Most every fix ends up with a dis-functional nut. RD

Rounded off nuts almost always come from using a tool that you should not use, something that does not quite fit right like a standard wrench/socket being used because it is almost right and the person didn't want to spend $10.00 bucks to get the right one. Yes if you feel you can get a vice-grip on it good, it might work, but more likely it might just make it worse if you can't get a good angle on it. Best thing to do is always use the correct size tool and use it properly.
One thing you also need to know is if the thread is left handed.

Here's a cut & paste update on Greg and the dreaded nut: Couldn't get it off, so I used the dremel and it's gone by by. Got a new variator and belt in the mail, and I'm waiting on the clutch to come in.
Nothing like a good whack eh RD? Rich
