I just had a young man come in for a sports physical, new to the clinic and I'd never seen him before. His mother said the boy is the "Star Player" on the basketball team he needs his physical so he can play, Friday.
The patients have to answer questions about their medical history and popping out at me is HISTORY OF MYOCARDITIS at age three.
Now, myocarditis can do things to the heart that can and does kill many basketball players, especially basketball players, they just drop dead in the middle of a game and then they go into the ground never to return.
This mother was outraged because I said he needed an echocardiogram before I could approve his participation in sports activities. You would have thought I just killed the boy, she was more interested in him playing than anything else. She had a fit.
This woman would have run to the nearest lawyer to sue me and everybody else she could, if he dropped dead after I said he could play.
These kind of things happen just too often. Somebody wants to do something, they wait to the last minute then want everybody else to jump through the hoops they set up so they can get what they want. Had this woman that knew months back her son would need a physical to be cleared for sports simply got copies of an old echo or just went to the doctor that has taken care of him for his physical, most likely he would be cleared. No that didn't happen she brings him to somebody that does not know anything about him. I also just found out that she has made an appointment to be seen in our pediatric clinic tomorrow. Best of luck to her.

What is really sad is how some parents try to live their lives through their children. They (the parent) may have not been good in sports or whatever so they somtimes force the child into it. The child has no fun in the activity and live in fear of being punished if the parent doesn't like how they are doing. I'm 56 years old and saw this when my childern were in school and it is even worse at my Grandchildrens events.

while I was in the navy, about 20 YO, my x and I used to go watch the kids play baseball at the enlisted housing field. It was some times more fun to watch the parents trying to run the game using the kids as pawns. no big fights as there were consequences being on gov property. today parents punch the ref and stomp the opposing coach. It makes me cringe when they stick a 7 YO on a mini bike that goes 50. that little kid has no idea what will happen when they loose it or dropping it in front of a pack of other kids racing behind them. It used to be that you had to be 18 to race at the local track.

I tried to be an involved parent so I ended up doing those Dad things. Cub Scout leader, coach. I really lost my taste for Little League after some guy brought his son to tears in front of everyone because he struck out. I switched to AYSO soccer because I played in school and coached kids from kindergarten through high school seniors. It was much more enjoyable because you don't have that be a superstar pressure from the parents.
I think the problem is that people expect their kids to grow up and get major league contracts or in the case of some of the little girls, become Miss America. Putting kids thru that should be called child abuse.
Doug - how many kids have you seen, especially the girls, with knee injuries from pushing too hard in sports or, around here, color guard or cheerleading?

Gotcha. Just making sure. Actually, around here the assistants do just about everything except hand out Rx's.

Well, you have a P.A. confused with an M.A. I think. M.A.s are office nurses. A physician assistant practices medicine under the supervision of a doctor. We can do about 80% of what a doctor can do, including writing a order for medicine , sewing up wounds, diagnosising and treating illnesses, order lab work, order x-rays, put on casts, some of us work in every specialty area, one of my instructors was a cardiothorastic surgery PA, he assisted in open heart surgery, many do the same thing for othopedic surgery, emergency room.......

He's in Cali - I've heard of people being prescribed cannabis for just about anything/everything.

There is a State law here that allows cannibus to be prescribed and you can go to the approved head shop to get it, some counties still bust them, of course San Fransisco probably not. Most others have been raiding them. That is until the Pres decided to not enforce the law on that, things might have changed.
