When I was in school we could carry pocket knives as long as the blades were 3" long or less. The only casualties I ever heard of were carved up desks and lunch tables. I did enjoy the reference to someone losing an eye... the knife that kid has is maybe 3" long... a pen or pencil could put out an eye in a fight and it's got a longer reach. Down with #2s!

oh yes it is so safe that we take a scout with a knife and kick him to the curb and on a side note to all this crap guess what the new scout rules make the knife a scout can carry even smaller than 3 inches so if it was a scout knife then it wasnt very big what is this world coming to when we cant even carry a usefull tool without being considered a criminal even as a leader when i go to a scouting event i have more knifes then most know what to do with on me one for each front pocket and cargo pocket and one on the belt
but then again we have to remeber the whole world must suffer thanks to inconsiderit jerks that dont punish there children oh wait thats right we cant punish our kids any more as the goverment knows whats best for us and them too
we need to go back to the way things were if dad caught you using your pocket knife in a way other then intended you got your ass beat learning fire arm saftey was a must and so was learning gun control(hiting what you aimed at) and you learned to respect the fire arm why was that dad or grandad took you out to shoot for the first time when the rifle still weighed more then you did so it knocked you on your ass if you miss used your bb gun you had to eat what you killed and boy is it a pia in the ass to pluck a pigion and there aint much meat on them bones

jmkjr,
So are you sure you feel that way?? Just kidding. When I was a kid knives were a no no at school too but I carried one from elementary school through high school, never stabbed anybody, even though some needed it.
I'm a fan of scouting and was a cub scout and boy scout leader, seems to me that I do not remember cubs being allowed to carry a pocket knife and if that thing was a cub scoot knife chances are it was a butter knife, good for spreading his peanut butter on a slice of bread, not much else.

I just saw an article on Katie Couric evenin news about the kid He had one of those foldup mess tools with a spoon, fork and a knife (he brought it to eat lunch with) I can understand the schools concerns, but cmon.. it'd be different if the boy assaulted or threatened someone with it His punishment was a little severe imo Heck around here kids get suspended for possesing handguns and drugs I don't get it.... when we were kids, if there was a problem between each other, we had a big tree that was off school grounds and met there after school to exchange a few blows These days kids are dangerous, but not the boy with the spoon

well for a cub to have a knife they would have to earn the privlage just like a boy scout has to earn his toten chit the cub scouts have a chit to earn to be able to carry a knife it involse knife saftey and you have to do a soap carving and normaly the boy scouts come down from the troop to teach the class that way the boy scout can earn his paul bunyon award
that does look like the official mess knife so it should be just a glorified butter knife

One of my sons had that experience in junior high and that was maybe 12-14 years ago. There is no doubt in my mind that if boys were allowed to be boys and settle things like that on their own first nobody would really get hurt, and after the little scuffle, they had a respect for each other, perhaps no friendship but they now this person stands up for himself, happened like that to me when I was a kid.

I was at the right age to see fighting go from getting broken up and having both parties sent to the principal to calling Maryland State Police to arrest both students. 9th grade for me was the last year of wrist slapping, by 10th grade every fight was an assault charge so that woulda been '94-'95.
We still had archery in gym though, go figure.

we used to play mumbly peg.at recess, in 5th and 6th grades. a couple kids had switch blades to play with. Then there was the yoyo craze, talk about a weapon! and then there was marbles, after that wore off they got shot with sling shots! john
