I have just installed the $65 variator from carlos in taiwan. I had 16 gram on stock variator and the 842 belt did not reach to outside by quit a bit. now with new one and 12 gram weights that came with it the belt goes to with in an 1/8th of an inch of the out side. my rpms are now down to 6200 where with old set up I was 200 more. would there be any advantage to mixing weights ? my top speed is now slightly higher than before, not a lot maybe 3-4 miles an hour. I am thinking I need to ad some power to get the speed up to 60-65 and leave the weights alone. I kind of like the acceleration but can part with some if I could get higher speed. john
edit............my rpms are now down to 6200 where with old set up I was 2000 more. 10:43

I guess we need to start a spreadsheet on these activities, as result are going all ovet the baord!
Rider weight Variator....Carlos's, by Carlos, or Carlos, by Prodigy, by KOSO, by PFS, wheel /tire size, inflation rate.
Using the PFS, and a modified outer fan wheel, which is still heavier than a Prodigy Tray and outer, I'm turning 14.3 gr(modded) Dr Pulley sliders to a Daytona Digital Tac, OEM Chinometer comarison of.... 5500rpm=55mph 6000rpm=60mph 6500rpm=65mph 7000rpm=70mph 7200rpm=72mph....now REMEMBER, thase are CHINOMILES/per/hour.... do I beleive 'em HELL no. Do I beleive I have upprd my actual/facual MPH, while reuced rpms....hell Yeah. But lets be reasonable, I doubt I'm seeing more than about 56mph, but even so, that's better tha 42 ph, and whole lots better than 43mph at 8200rpm!
I'd try for a set of 13g's ct, and see where you are then. Be prepeared for some 14's or a 13/14 mix. I got all but 1/64" of the marker, and I weigh 270lbs.

guess I will get out the paper tomorrow and try a few things. it did give a whole lot of extra acceleration and drop the rpms at least by 2000 . might even try a 2 way run on stretch of road then pull the briggs muffler go straight pipe, and try it again to see if there is any gains or losses. biggest problem is I have over 2 miles of dirt road before I can go full throttle, then have to go home to make another change. and just got 600 miles on it so I am going for another oil change. so far 1 at 0 miles, 2 at 200, 3 at 600 miles and then synthetic at 1000 is in the plans. thanks kliff john

I was back at it tonight. tried a mix of 12-16 then a straight run of 12's. the rpms were just about the same wide open, up to 7200. top speed was possibly a bit less with 12's but the hill climbing ability was better. after all done I opened the case up to check the magic marker lines. the 12's came with in a few thousands of what the mix was. unless I try a mix of 11 -12 I am done for now with weights. I did notice that speed verses rpm's was not consistent. wide open at a given speed one time it was 6800 the next time it would be 7000 or a little more, same road same place on road. I keep thinking if it were breathing better I could have a much more consistent road speed. once I can get it to a true 55 it will stay there on the level, but to get it there it isnt always easy. Arkansas is just full of twisty up and downs. I took note of two spots I call worst case places and the 12's were good for 45 china verses 42 the mix of 12 and 16's. with 12's and the bad fuel pump I maxed out at 6200. John

John I asked JR what weights he put in my Bali with this set up? As you said Arkansas up and down boy don't we know that! Mix 14's and 13's for a 13.5 and put an 842 belt on it! Mine will haul butt up the long hard climb to Petit Jaen. Believe me Jr tried about 8 differnet combos and this worked best in these Arkansas hills. What amazes me most is with this combo my gas mileage went up to over 80 miles per gallon! Mrs JR

Gotta jump in!
Hello Mrs. JR! I've surely enjoyed talking to Jack on the phone. He REALLY knows these variators. I've got one from the wife (Santa) for Christmas, and it's got to stay "under the tree" until then, because it's all I'm getting...
I finally got my VERY pesky scooter motor running about perfect from zero to wide-open, which translates into 53 mph at 8,200 rpm or a little more. TOO HIGH rpm of course, SO... enter the Prodigy variator and a longer belt.
Won't know until next spring, but no hardship riding as-is for now. Never ran better. Should be even better still with the Prodigy. I'll let all know, once I get it on!
Ride safe, and please say "hi" to JR!
