My wonderful son took it upon himself to cross up the battery wires. Didn't actually tighten them in - just layed the wires on the post to see if the lights all worked. Its a new bike we are putting together that came 85% assembled. The top headlights came on but nothing else. The fuse on the positive wire got hot but did not melt. Now after hooking it up right, no juice. What do you guys thing happened or damaged. I am hoping its just a fuse.

Might not just be a fuse, but most scooters have a main fuse on the positive wire that is attached to the battery.
Can you tell us exactly what scooter you have? I am assuming it is a Chinese import since it came 85% assembled. I might be able to locate a wiring diagram that would work for you to chase down.
Did anything smoke?

I assume because it was hooked up backwards.

The fuse just got hot, it was only on there less than a minute. The top headlights came on but nothing else worked. I read a couple posts from people who got these scooters stating the battery that comes with it often is defective and only a shipping battery whatever that is supposed to be. I am wondering if the battery might just be bad .

No doubt the battery is not likely a premium battery but you can check ot with a test light or by taking it to a auto parts place that will do a test under load. I don't think you would have killed it by a short term backwards connection.

I have seen more then one scoot when they hooked things up backwards and it ended up cooking most of the ele system and this includes higher end scoots and low cost scoots
Start with testing the battery then on to the regular stator and so o n

OK - all is well. The only reason it was acting was because the wire holding the fuse was not attached to the solenoid. Put it on, now everything works and it turns over. Have not started it yet because I am still replacing some of the chine junk bolts and hoses. I was going to add a vacuum gauge. Is there a preferred port that will give a full vacuum signal for the gauge ?

There is a nipple for vacuum on the intake manifold.

Thank you. One more question. I am about 4500 elevation, have removed the air box and replaced it with a cold air supply and will be installing a performance exhaust. How many steps up on the main jet should I go and do you think I would need to mess with the other jets ? Thanks - JS

There is just no getting around doing plug reads.
If you have not considered a performance variator you are overlooking a crucial mod.

Ok thanks I will look into that. I want to add a air/fuel guage. Something about 2" i can dash mount. Whats a good one to go with. Do I need to drill into the exhaust for this ?

You are going to have to weld a fitting into the exhaust pipe for the air/fuel mixture sensor to go in, as I understand it you need to be high up the pipe as much as reasonable.
