THIS IS INTERESTING
some time back when i still had my old motor
I started to experiance a die out when at WOT
I pulled and soaked the carb and its parts and got a lot of brown varnish from this effort,
put carb back on, still problem at WOT
old engene pop a valve cap, it had 14.000 mile so i replaced the motor
still WOT issues
changed CDI, got better better but not did fix wot issue
changed coil, spark wire, spark cap,
new Gas petcock
new battery and selenode, made bike starter run smoother, battery was bad and not pushing starter motor as it should.
still bad WOT issues
pulled carb again, this time I found by blowing all gas passages flowed.
later i blew throughcarb gas passages again,
AND SOMETHING WEIRD HAPPEN
while blowing with good air flow through the gas intake to float pin, suddenly it blocked.
I sucked and it opened, this is with everything (guts) out of carb soaking in bowl of carb cleaner.
long storie short, there was a very small flake of metal in carb gas intake passage turning open and shut.
it was a PITA to push out too!
My 180 is running like a charm again and i can go back to chasing the girls again
BIG THANKS TO doug and jmkjr72 for holding my hand through this.Attachments:

it can be hit or miss as to how long it will last i had a car that had a bad spot on the fly wheel that lasted a couple of years before the spot got so large i couldnt just turn the engine by hand to find the teeth again

Buy the parts and have them ready for when you don't want to put up with it anymore. Eventually it just won't work.

Boy, let me re-compose myself. The thing is, until you have it apart you really are not absolutely positive what you will need. You can easily pull the starter out and see if the gear on the end of the motor shaft is messed up, if so you need that. It does sound to me like there are some teeth messed up either there or on the starter clutch. As Joe pointed out you can probably look down that hole and rotate the motor to see if the gears on the starter clutch are toast. Remember that starter clutch is about the diameter of a variator so you should do a lot of looking before you pronounce it OK. Parts you should get include 1. starter 2. Starter clutch 3. a case seal, there is a oil seal for the shaft that comes out of the right side of the case that the clutch mounts up to. 4.silicon sealer. 5. exhaust gasket, you will be pulling the exhaust off to get to the right side so you need that gasket when you put it back on. 6.There might be a case gasket on that side that could be replaced, often you can out a bead of silicone on instead. You will also need a tool or two, like a clutch removal tool You'll need something that will hold the variator to keep the motor form turning when you try and remove the clutch. www.leroybeal.net/motorcycles/silverwing/articles/drivepulleytool/drivepulleytool.htmlPlaces I ordered Kymco parts from are here;(I know, yours is not a Kymco but I bet the parts fit, just a hunch) www.stadiumyamaha.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=KYMwww.tntcycles-atv.com/pages/oemparts?aribrand=KYMwww.kymcoparts123.com/pages/OemParts?aribrand=KYM

OK, looking at the parts dusted off my memory. The starter motor shaft does have teeth on it but it slides inside the gears that doe the turning on the starter clutch, so I really do not think you can look down there and see anything. I also don't think it will be a starter motor problem, but a gear problem inside the right case. Red parts are what you should get, I made the starter red here before I changed my mind about it.

The parts in the rectangle are the starter clutch, it looks like Kymco sells them individually, but you should be able to it as one piece. or I guess you could buy just the gear part and change that.
The top picture I have the oil seal and case gasket in red. In the bottom picture the round red thing next to the starter is actually a "O" ring that seals the starter keeping oil form the case forma leaking out of the top.
