My son just got a new taoTao ATM50-A1 and has what seems to be a carburetor issue. The scoot starts right up and idles smoothly but as soon as you twist the throttle it bogs and dies. You can ride it until the electric choke opens. then the throttle response problems start. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you check for vacuum leaks? A line pop off?, crack in the intake manifold?

I'll have him try to run down any vacuum leaks. Does this scooter have an air/fuel mixture screw on the carb or is it sealed?

99% of all the new carbs are sealed

About 85% of the sealed ones you can then drill out the cap and adjust the mixture. but it probably is not that if it is a stock scooter. It is a little better to just order a new cab off of ebay than to start messing with it drilling it out. You can find them with no seal on it.

Okay! Any suggestions on what carb would be a good replacement? My son also tried restricting airflow through the intake and it runs better. Do you think that could be due to a vacuum leak like Rebel suggested earlier?

well get a propane torch out dont light it with the scooter idleing and the torch on pass the tip over the intake and that area and see if the idle increases
then go and replace all the hoses vaccum and the fuel line
i personaly would consider a diffrent carb and a manual fuel petcock too

You said it was a new scooter, did you get it from an online dealer or a local dealer? If you have a way to get a warranty repair I'd do that before spending money on parts. Keep in mind that anything you get MAY need the jets changed to match your scooter, you could pull the jet from the current carb. I'd still make sure there is no vacuum leak before ordering a carb. something like this

I personally checked the scooter out yesterday. I found an open vacuum port on the carb that looks like it is supposed to hook directly into the air box. We're going to try connecting it and see if it makes any difference. Does anyone know what it is for?

A photo might help. Usually there is a line going from the valve cover to the air cleaner box that is a crankcase pressure relief type thing. From the carb you could have a line going to the vacuum controlled valve that is normally on the bottom of the gas tank.

This scooter was purchased online from a place in Dallas. They haven't been much help. I'm not going to be able to do anything until this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes and also see if I can send some pics of the carb and vacuum lines.

Vacuum lines help power the fuel pump . Vacuum and gas lines should be replaced with automotive fuel lines since the cheap ones crack and collapse . Skip using a torch . Start it up on the center stand and spray starting fluid around the hoses and if it stalls you have a leak . I would get a tuneable carb as the factory ones are way too lean which limit power , run hot and can burn a hole in your piston . I know had 2 pistons crack in my TaoTao what a POS . I put on a 50mm BBK as I no longer wanted a piston made with butter . It was a " secret 63 " . Here is several carbs priced low eshop.mainelyscooters.com/product-category/cat-intake/cat-carburetor/cat-carb/ . I would also opt for a jet kit as well

Sorry it's taken so long to answer. I can't explain it but the damned thing started running great. Thanks for all the help. He's still going to replace the carb. Thanks again!
