It could very well be corrosion in the connectors since it has been sitting outside for so long. If you do not want to spend any money start with pulling apart and putting back together every connector in the harness (one by one). If the issue is corrosion causing the problem that will most likely fix it. Also, check that the rectifier has a good solid ground. Usually the unit is grounded via the casing and the bolt that holds it, any corrosion there will result in a bad ground.

I advocate doing the cheapest thing possible first, especially if you are not sure what is really wrong. Take a car to a shop and sometimes the professional "technician" is just guessing and charges you for his guesses until he finds what was really the problem.

I would think you would be doing OK if it has gone that long. How many miles have you gone over that time.

50 miles isnt a lot of riding but im guessing its a lot of stop and go and was it started daily in that time frame
if you are starting it at say more then 10 times in that 50 miles that may be a hint as to what your issue may be
not enough time when riding to properly rehcarge the battery

unless that 4.5 miles is all wot its might not be enough time to recharge the battery
you might want to think about getting a tender

They usually do, but you might also find a regular trickle charger with the same set up.
