Ouch... That is a bitch to have to buy special tools that one may never need again, unless there is a need for them on other jobs...

This is why I had so many special tools when building race chassis for drag cars... To bad that when they were all stolen, I wish they would have left them behind, because no one else would even know what they were for, and would have to throw them away... All were custom built...

I didn't see that one at Scrappy's, honestly, it came off so easily with the pipe wrench I think if I hadn't already ordered one, I wouldn't. The rest of the parts I ordered, I'm concerned about, I've been out of town all week and they have not emailed me or called my cell, they were supposed to get back to me.

You think the package(s) may have been stolen. Did you have someone checking the mail while you were gone?

yup got somebody picking the mail up. I'm not really concerned about them getting stolen from the house, I'm more concerned about them not getting back to me. I'll give them a call if I don't have a package of parts waiting for me when I get home.

Got home, it is about 2:20 a.m. the starter clutch and the removal tool showed up, the other parts didn't.

Any update on Ted's scoot? I hope it's not turning into a nightmare cause I referred him to you so I'd feel guilty in a way.

The only nightmare is getting the parts. I have it apart waiting for things to get it put back together.
Re-cap; What I found out is that the starter clutch was bad and the good news is that the regular GY6 part will fit, got that.
The gear for the kick start is shot, secondary to the bushing, ordered both
The rear brake is worn out, ordered that.
List of ordered parts;
COil
Kymco - GASKET EXH PIPE
Kymco - BUSH KICK SPINDLE
Kymco - GASKET R COVER
Kymco - OIL SEAL 19.8x30x5
Kymco - SHOE ASSY RR BRAKE
Kymco - KICK DRIVEN GEAR COMP
Kymco - BOLT FLANGE 6*16MM (bolts for the starter)
Ted is being very understanding about the waiting for the parts. Once they get here, it shouldn't be too bad of a job to get it back together, still need to get the rear wheel off so I can take the brake shoes off.

On the rear brake, I've found that the brake shoes aren't what wears out fast but it's the brake cable that stretches out so you run out of adjustment on the adjusting nut due to the cable stretch but the shoes still have lots of wear on them so to fix the issue you have to remove the cable from the rear lever, remove the bolt from the rear lever and pull it partially off the brake cam and then reinstall it a few clicks clockwise, This compensates for the stretched cable and gives you back most of the adjustment again. If that makes sense.
What I'm saying is that most of the time the brake shoes aren't why the brake won't grab, it's the stretched out brake cable so you move the rear lever two or three clicks clockwise on the actuating cam and voila!

Well on something like a brake I need to eyeball it, but what you say makes sense.
You have to wonder why they didn't put rear disks on this bike, my cheap 150 has it and this Kymco cost a lot more than mine did. Disks are so much better brakes and no cable to stretch.

Got home from work last night and there was a package of Kymco parts sitting there. Looks like I have something to do this week end!
Also got a new throttle cable for my scooter, routed it back throught from the throttle to the carb, still need to put the throttle back on it and put it all together. I hope to finish all the scooter work tomorrow and have some time for a littl fun Sunday.
About 50 miles from my house a couple of the giant redwoods fell over on a trial called the trail of a hundred giants, I'd like to get up ther and see that.

Spent the day with the Kymco. It was a bit frustrating.
The starter now works, this was the first problem listed, the one that started it. The regular gy6 starter clutch fit like a glove. Replaced the coil with one of the orange "high performance" coils. It was also a gy6 part and worked just fine. Fixed the kick start. All this went well.
Troubles started first with the brakes. I took the swing arm off and the pulled the wheel out, the shoes look like they had just as much pad as the new ones so I left them on. Went to look at the lever arm and it is tucked between two parts of the case. On these there is a gear case bolted to the inside of the case the lever is between the gear case and the trans case, not open to get at. I'm thinking it would be easier to just replace the cable. So the brakes are still a problem.
Started it up and it runs but not well and not for long, a minute or two and if I give it gas, it dies. So it has carb issues too.

On that rear brake, that lever doesn't have to come all the way off. You remove the bolt that holds it tight and then pull it off half way. The outer half of the lever will slip off the end of the shaft and the inner half will move to the smooth part of the shaft where the bolt passes through. You can also work the shaft in and out with your hand from the other side with the tire off. It will pull completely out of the case once that bolt is removed from the rear actuating lever. A little high temp grease on the shaft isn't a bad idea.

Thanks,
I gave that a try but could not get it to go back on at a different position.
So here is the current state of the scooter.
I got it to start, the starter now turns the motor over and it will run but not for long. I feel like it has some varnish build up in the carb. I put some seafoam in the tank and ran it as much as I could to get new fuel in the carb hoping the seafoam will dissolve the varnish. I could not see a fuel filter between the tank and the carb so who knows what went in there.
Brakes, no improvement.
Kickstart, now works
New coil, the old one had a back plug on it
Ted picked it up and is on his way home with it. I needed to get on some of my own projects around here and the wife does not like clutter.
