The thing is, the motor has to be set up correctly.
Changing the gears out to lower the RPMs is ok as long as you are doing it to keep it in the power ban. For long run you need to have it running at its optimum not on the edges.
Any idea as to how high he was revving it?

You figure that most of these things run about 8500 in a regular geared 150 at 55 mph or so. He was hitting 55 to 60 a lot with a gearing change for full tanks of gas. It looked like he fried the piston and cylinder so you know the rings didn't seal and hot exhaust was blowing off oil and scorched the wall. With a GY6 it takes a long time for the rings to break in properly. There's a reason they set about 1500 miles or so as break in. Remember kliff describing the changes in his engine during every ride and he changed the oil like it was free. Breaking in an engine on an Interstate at 58 mph is a formula for disaster.

It was a noble effort non the less. I'm sure your right KZ. You might be able to do it if you could take back roads the whole way. Now that he lost, I wonder what it is his wife has to do for his friend he made the bet with? HE SAID IT WAS NOTHING SEXUAL, and I'm not implying that. But he is a photographer and perhaps he wants to photograph her in an ad or something. I'm just curious is all.

i have actually considered putting out a scooter you tube channel and/or pod cast my self. anyone interested in this, pm me. i have ridden every thing i can, regardless of it's point of origin, and i gotta say, some of these china scoots are built better than some euro bikes. a good ride is just that, a good ride. i have seen these cheap bikes take more abuse, reverse engineering and poor quality service, than anything else and somehow, stay running. sure, if you have ever worked on an old geely, you know, there really are some horror stories, but, color me crazy, it kinda makes the scooter world more entertaining.
anywho, haters be darned, if it scoots - i'll ride it.

well i was thinking about talking scooter stuff once a month, wearing a bear hat and some sleezy sunglasses, and generally goofing off in scooter land. maybe some repair tutorials, or something like that. and i want to chronicle the life and times of my scooter. i thought a pod cast would be better since im not the prettiest thing, but i have a friend with a you tube channel, and he keeps poking me to start one on scooters. 50/50.

well, im a pretty goofy guy, but i kinda run out of ideas after a while, so if anyone is near me, maybe we could get together, and bounce ideas off of a couple of beers, or it would be cool to get other voices involved, because im not entirely confident that i can keep people entertained on a weekly basis on my own, lol i relocated to tx btw.

i would not bash..just gotta scoot or for that matter david carrington...even if...they don't fully embrace....chineese..drop ship...scooters..or the dealers...who won't/can't service them.....you can still learn quite a bit.from such podcasts......while i am not a fan of chinese clones.....mc 54 this or that.....i fully respect those who live and swear by them.....not everyone can afford a t-max...and there is a lot of fun in rolling up your sleves and satisfaction when you can fix something yourself and enjoy doing it.....

Welcome, I have to agree with a lot of what you say. I still think that bashing the Chinese scooters though is just not giving them credit for being there for people that do not either want to spend a lot of money on a scooter or have it to spend.

Hey, I remember back in the 60's and 70's having to mess with my Hondas a lot to get them to start, loved em anyway. Always had to clean the plug or file the points down and re gap them. I chewed up a tranny on my first one. The dealer didn't stock parts because it was an older Honda, didn't even have a parts micro for it.

Not to run too far off topic but I remember how bad that was. I had a 1968 YR-3 350cc Yamaha. I bought it in 1973 and needed new points and condenser. The dealer looked at me like I had three heads. "We don't carry parts for anything that old." They tried to order them from the distributor but failed to get them. So glad when electronic ignition came along.
