Brother commutes during good weather about 16 miles each way and just turned 14K chinos on his GY6. On his way home a couple of weeks ago she shut down on him so he called his bud with a truck and ramps and loaded her up. Thought is was just a soft-seize, but didn't turn out that way. Stuck his rod to the crank. His bud that rebuilt it for him said that he is 99.9% sure the oil pump was the culprit because the tolerance is so fine. Any rate, back together and purrs better than when new so he is going to take it easy for awhile.
Question is- Is/would an oil cooler any help?

Not if the pump gave out, seems like it was doing a good job until the pump gave out and then the rod froze. It would not have hurt to have one though.

like rebel said it would have prevented the seize
but it will help the engine run cooler and the oil to hold up better and infact it can actauly add just a bit of capicty to the oil system too

Sorry, but been off the scoot for awhile this winter.
Jonesy 14K is nothing! I have 20,638 on my '06 GY6, but of course I do not ride WOT. Speeds range from 20-45mph on my commutes.

That's the secret to long engine life in everything. Use them at a sensible pace and they last forever. BTW, I'd think that a magnetic drain plug would help an oil pump last. Little bits of loose metal will kill anything.

how about a true oil filter in line with the oil cooler = more cap., lower temp, and cleaner oil a win win win way to go

I wonder if the oil pump puts out enough pressure to go a filter and a cooler. The more things you push the oil through the more pump you need. But if it would handle it, yes clean oil is better than dirty oil.
