I was wondering what y'all could tell me about the emission systems on scooters. My 2008 QMJ157 had a canister at the back right, just over the cooling fan, that had a vac line, a large hose to a "squirrel" pipe on the front of the valve cover, and then another small, open hose hanging down in front of the valve cover. This hose had a barbed elbo clamped to it that made me think it was designed to attach to something, maybe if the bike went to a certain state. I took mine off and put a blocking plate on the front of the head. When did these things start showing up, what are they called, and are they here to stay? Thanks

I think most people here would call them, in the way. Then call them trash and look for a can to put them in. But you probably don't want that on your web page. you might check out one of the manuals and see what they call it.

But you probably don't want that on your web page. you might check out one of the manuals and see what they call it. I found it, actually Earlwb did, I can't take credit, wish I could. It's called Pulsed Air Injection, the vacuum pulses from the exhaust port pull fresh air in to help burn uncombusted fuel. I removed mine and blocked the port before I knew what it was beacuse it just looked like a crappy emissions add on. I felt like it helped the way it runs but looking at the diagram (attached) I don't see how it would make much difference. Attachments:

looks like an air injector that helps burn unburned fuel in the exhaust system.

and you dont want to disable it on a 2 stroke untill you get an after market pipe if you do so then you will plug your pipe up on the 2 stroke a line will run from the airbox to the smog box and then to the pipe if you look down the pipe when it is on you will see the nice cherry glow of the converter being properly heated if you take it off the converter wont get ho enough
and we can thank the good folks at c.a.r.b. for all these goodies(sorry i just gota rip on that part of ca)

Don't worry, a lot of us in Kalifornia that have similar feelings.
And sorry bashan, I just looked at the picture and didn't read your text before I commented or I'd not have commented.

No worries mate, I thought it was crap before I took it off and I still think it's crap even after finding out what it was. It was ugly as hell and I hated it, looked like the alien attached to my scoot. I still think it runs better without it, might be just psychological. Oh, mine's a four stroke JMK, good warning though. Earl said mine doesn't have a cat converter, that's something you left coasts get to enjoy...snik. Actually, we could use a little pollution control here in 'Bama, maybe even a breath mint once in a while.

See now, YOU are the ones bringing the end of the world as we know it, I'm telling Al Gore on you.

I swear Doug, if you tell Al Gore on me I'll have Clinton come to your house and do you, takes a phone call, that's it, so watch it... Hey JMK, I hope you don't mind, I am going to C&P your warning about removing the PAIR from 2 strokes to a post on SD; well, I hope you REALLY don't mind, I already did it.....sorry . Hey PROBOARDS, that emoticon looks more constipated than embarassed.

just get lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
Clinton, well not much to worry about there, if he sees a female he will get diverted.

Removing the PAIR system really did improve my scoot's overall running. Not just psychological! Mine had a rubber hose from the exhaust fittting, and it only took a month to burn through... REALLY ran bad after that... Removing the whole thing and blocking the fitting off fixed it.
I do believe that equipment is the answer to a question nobody's asking! LOL!
Ride safe,
Leo in Texas
PS: I understand those hot 'Bama summers... got 'em here too, but after weeks below freezing here this winter I have a hard time believing "global warming" is real. Hope we NEVER have another winter this cold, and, A FOOT OF SNOW! That NEVER happens here. But it did. Go figger...
