Ahah! The ol' CDI got fried scenario. Seen it many times. I keep 10 of them in stock at all times. Some DC some AC. One time I lost my keys so I hot-wired my scooter and it fried the CDI. Most of the time they go bad for no apparent reason though. :? Glad you're up and running again.

When my ex chinese girlfriend came to america, she could not believe the clean air, she said she could breath again.
Much of China is one of the most humid places on earth.
copper resistance is dictated by the presence of oxygen in the wire mixing with moisture .
you can bet as time goes by, moisture sealed in the epoxied cdi, rusts or brings out the copper sulfate in the wire, at which point the cdi will lose capacitance.
and fail
when copper rusts it looks like this, the capacitors can not work under these conditionsAND REMEMBER FOLKS, YOU LEARNED THIS AT ""SCOOTER REBEL" WHERE FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS GET BASHED AT ANOTHER FORUM

Glad you got it going Leo. I am a proponent of doing the cheap easy fixees before hard expensive ones any day. As I recall you hit it on the head before you posted here.

Glad you got it going Leo. I am a proponent of doing the cheap easy fixees before hard expensive ones any day. As I recall you hit it on the head before you posted here. I also got hit ON the head not so long ago, pushing a guy's Hog... LO not so L... I still feel a little like Vinnie Barbarino for the "Welcome Back Cotter" days... "I'm SO confewzeddd...."Almost. I really DID think it was the coil, since there was a weak spark, but the CDI did the trick. Reminds me that all the electronic gizmos have to be working right to get the juice to the plug. I guess the simple concept of the actually complex electronic ignition is still way ahead of the old points-and-condenser days. The good thing about the old systems however, is that they usually went bad S-L-0-W-L-Y... You KNEW when it was getting time for new points... The new CDI setups seem to go bad almost overnight, with little warning. In all honesty though, I did see some slight "heads-up" warning signs through a little "stumbling" at idle. Felt like a weak spark. It WAS... I changed the original stock plug for a new Iridium plug, and the engine really came to life at speed, but there was STILL a slight stumble at idle. But, it was only sporadic. Not a constant thing. THAT indeed WAS my warning to replace the CDI and probably the coil too. More than four riding seasons seems to be a lot on these parts, admitedly of somewhat "dubious" quality. An ounce of preventive maintenance is worth a mile of pushing... HeHeHe... Ride safe!Leo in Texas PS: I truly wonder just how many riders give up in frustration because the factory CDI, coil, plug, stator/"magneto" or carb go bad right away. Most all the reliability issues with Chinese scoots (and even expensive Italian scoots, according to a few Vespa riders I've met...) are related to these parts.
