I blocked off my PAIR with a piece of copper sheet essentially like the block plate Kliff mentions, but home made. Really simple, and copper is easy to work with plus it will deform some making the plate seal. Just remove the pipe where it bolts on to the head, cut the copper sheet to overlap the hole into the head and the two bolt holes, then drill out the holes in the plate. Use some high-temp liquid gasket to hold the plate in place, put the PAIR pipe back and tighten down the bolts. No more PAIR. Simple as that. /Otto Never thought of using copper Otto....sweeet! down, dirty, simple, and easy....it don't get no better than that!

Well, I took an afternoon off and finished removing the superfluous tubes and hoses. Pulled the carb and checked for dirt, or torn diaphragm. All in order. Even the original fuel lines were still perfect. I still replaced all fuel and the now-simple vacuum lines, and added a manual petcock.
I checked the valves, and happily they were at .004" on the money. While apart, I installed a #125 main jet in the stock carb. Started right up and idled fine as always. Now, it will go to about 30 mph before it starts sucking air!
The monster main jet which should make it very rich, only improved the running a little, but it still runs out of gas at about 6K rpm. A big improvement, but still TERRIBLE. I'm more convinced than ever that something went south in the stock carb, even though it's clean and seems in order. Maybe a piece of casting "flash" got loose and into the guts.
The new Mikuni carb arrived today and a quick check shows it has a 42.5 idle jet and a 120 main jet. Should be good to go. It's a direct bolt-on except for the electric choke. It has a plug with 2 black wires, and my original is hard-wired into the system. I'll have to be sure the current goes as it should. I'd think the wires would be color-coded, but both are black.
Can't get back to it until next week, but I'm betting it solves the problem!
Have a great weekend ya'll!
