Most owners of the 50cc buy them because they do not need to get a M.C. endorsement or register the scooter.
Often times the new owner finds that they want the scooter to go faster and be better able to maintain speed going up a hill. The way to improve performance starts simple but becomes more involved fast. here is the order of modification I recommend.
Check the scooter for restrictions; some CDI's are revlimited some variators may have a restricting washer some exhaust may have a flow restrictor all airboxes are restrictive
Do the mods; obviously this pretty much goes without saying (do the mods) If you open the airbox, change the filter to a uni filter, and or the exhaust you will need to adjust your carb so that the scooter is not running too lean, you might be able to just move the clip on your needle valve down a notch or you may need to get a larger jet for it.
Variator weights. by changing the weights you can tune the performance for the rpm power band you run in
Big Bore kits This is where you will see the most impressive gain in power. Experts I have talked to recommend for daily riders to use the 72cc bore kit. There are bigger kits but they cause reliability problems.

I'm still curious about those reliability problems, with the main bearings, and larger than 72cc kits. Even though it is a pain in the rear, I wonder if openning the cases, and dumping those 5.00 Chinese bearings, and putting some good SKF's, or some ceramics(NOT CHEAP) might not sove some of those issues. Damn, I really don't want too many irons in the fire, but my Nephew is still talking 50cc scooter for going o College, and I KNOW he's gonna want a little more oooooompf than 50cc will give him. And I KNOW any 18 year old is gonna keep it "pinned" regardless.....
I can get a brand spanker qmb for a little under 300.00. Should I, or shouldn't I...... 150 bux for 80cc kit, including head, 80.00 for some ceramics.... less than 600 for one hot little 80qmb, I could give him for an Xmas present.....that is if he gets a 50cc scoot for HS graduation...
Replacement bearings have gotta be the key..... why do I do this to myself?

I know cc's are the way to go. But I would like to to a diff profile cam and head work on a 50. Then throw the cc to it.

Kliff I bet standard set of real ball bearings would work. You'll probably beat me to it, but I'm going to give that a shot this next Winter and see if my Son can put a rod through the bottom of it. He can blow up anything .

LOL, well the bearings seem to be the weak spot on the 50cc if you want to push the power envelope, any improvement would help (in the bearings), but, at what point are you really better off just to spend a few extra buck at the start and get a 150cc scooter.

Just a bunch of foolish ole men, not wanting to admit the "wall" is 72cc...LMAO! Oh why am I even considerring this....why?

man kliff I would love to sit around the BBQ with a few cold ones and listen to some of the "mistakes " you have had over the years I bet I would be in tears.
some of the biggest boo-boos are from thinking way outside the box and having the guts to try them out.
oh BTW if I house, feed and show you the local sites could I get you to stay at the house for a week or 2 and kick my 50cc up a few notches

some variators may have a restricting washer
where can i find a sterp by step for doing this

For that you will need to take the variator apart, the washer is between the two halves and does not allow them to come completely together. I'll look for a step by step direction on that.

oh quick tips on bearings on nearly all bearings including the cheap chinese ones in scooters, there is a 4 digit number take that number to any parts store "i prefer napa's bearings" and they can cross referance the number easily even the dumb kids at the counter and guesse what nearly every bearing in a scoot can be found at anyt auto parts store and substantially cheaper than at scooter parts sites .... i just replaced my trailing arm bearings websites wanted 30-50 bucks a piece for chinese replacements and got top quality ones for 10 bucks a piece
