Ya, I know somebody that at least perhaps until recently thought scooters had to be an automatic, I'm not sure if he has changed his mind or not. My personal feelings are that small wheels define a scooter, nothing else really matters.

The buzz at the dealer expo was that they were going to change the name from "scooters" to "motorcycles" because everyone else in the universe besides, Steve, Kliff, Doug, and maybe some diehard cushman guys consider these to be motorcycles.

And this is coming from a large group of people that call/market very obvious scooters, "mopeds", ya, they are real experts aren't they

with the wind in CO spring, the 16s are needed to make sure you can hold the line when the gust comes and wants you to change lanes. I actually was pushed by the wind into another lane early spring 2009. Scared the poop right out of me! I am just glad that there was no car directly beside me, and the car that was in the lane was a couple car lengths behind. those 10 inch wheels. . .man I was glad to move up to the 14s on the LaVie. And now with the Pegs 16's, I did lode some agility but what I made up for in balance (gyroscope effects and all) I will never look back. The wheels size if what made it hard for me to find a 250cc that I could move up to, I can't find a scoot that has 16s that ALSO has a low enough seat height I that I can keep it up at stops. I tried the Kymco People 250 and I was literally tippy toe. A spring gust of wind would have the bike down. I'm front ball of foot on the Peg as it is. Thinking that this weekend the seat gets shaved. . .

No question about it 16 inch wheels have a big advantage in handling characteristics and is why they feel like riding a motorcycle.
I have a local friend here that has a 250with 13 inch wheel in the front and a 10 inch in the back, he won't ride it on a freeway because of the blow over factor by big trucks.

My wife did two days on a 12" wheeled dirt bike and decided she wanted a Street bike after riding a 10" wheeled scooter for three weeks. Now she runs the Rebel on the Interstate and trucks don't bother her a bit.
