I pulled the jug today, and it seems that last time I replaced the head I installed the lower chain guide upside down, the plastic side should face the chain right? So you can see it chewed off some metal, could it have made its way back into the jug and caused it to become scored, causing loss of compression?
So I have a glass coffee table top that we are about to throw out. If I put down some ~150 grit sand paper down on that, will that be flat enough for head/cylinder resurfacing? Is all glass perfectly flat or should I go to a glass shop and get something that is "extra flat?" Just wondering for future reference.
Well, even glass does bend. if you do go ahead with the sanding effort, be sure to use some wet and dry sand paper, you will need to keep some oil on it too. Regular sand paper like you sand a piece of wood with will not hold up.
Youch Bullet! I'd be concerned about the metal bits going into the crank case, change your oil and see what it looks like, do you have a magnetic oil drain plug?

Rebel, I changed the oil and gear oil a few weeks ago, before I knew about this so I didn't look for metal in the oil. I will change it again before I run it. Hopefully that was the culprit!
It s one of those things like trying to un-shoot a bullet. Once it is done it is done and you have to take the consequences as they come. Metal shavings going around in the oil can get into a lot of places and cause damage. I don't think it would score a cylinder, but it could damage a bearing, gear, any mating surface oil is supposed to protect.

WE HAVE COMPRESSION !!! I just installed new rings and got the valve cover on and I thought this would be a good time to test compression, results 160 psi. up from 100, gotta get back to work

running great just a litttle smoke, i have been riding all afternoon, amazed at the power, Currently running a 130 main and and a 39 idle on a 24mm stock carb, plug is a lil rich, oil is showing, but it's amazing I have my old bike back, hills no problem, I may have not installed the rings right, but i'm so happy about it, I outran several cars today, amazing! So if I have to reinstall the rings no problem, Just so excited the power is back, Thanks to all the Rebels for all of your help!
;D Sweeeeet. Wasn't trying to be an ass, by not jumping in, but Doug had this thing spot on from the beginning, and more oft than not, too many cooks can spoil the pie.
Hey, sometimes I'm wrong too, so I never mind a correction from a real expert. But thanks for the complement.
I did tell myself last night when I read about the smoke, that I never advised him to use a pre-lube for the assembly. My father who taught me most everything I ever learned about working on motors, always advised a little oil or something on new parts as they go together, no much, just enough to not be totally dry, and help things slide together, or even stick in place for a moment.

Doug, I used marvel mystery oil, more than a little, on the rings, piston, and the cylinder, I did not see a bevel or the letter T on the rings, one of them had a shiney side so I put it to the top of the piston, the other ring was solid black. I did check the gaps and they were .008'' from the factory. I installed them using a reference from lee on SD big bore and top end rebuild or something, and they were very close to the mercedes emblem. The oil ring gap was on the top with the smalller ones 10mm to either side, and no rings facing down. I rode about 40 miles last night, about a 5 minute easy ride, 5-10 minute cool down, two good 10 minute medium rides, cool down, and two 20 minute hard runs. I just got back from another 40 miles, mostly wide open with a couple 5 minute smoke breaks. She is still smoking a little when you rev it up, but it looks alot better. I have not been able to jet it yet, so it may be running rich 130 main. I read somewhere that rich/lean could cause white/black smoke forgot how it goes, but it is probally the rings seating in my case. I tried to post this earlier, but I was attaching that rebuild guide and it is too big. If the smoke don't go away in a few days I will order some quality MRP rings, more gaskets and do it again, since I know how to now, with the help from all of you guys. Thanks again everyone for the help, it felt great to get out ride with power.
Oil burns blueish white, rich/gas burns black. You can put a white cloth or paper behind the exhaust and see what color it turns, or just check out he end of the pipe.
Don't forget to vary the RPMs. the up and down is what sets the rings faster.

westonpersons: Adjust your valves to .006". There should be easy directions on youtube, otherwise just remove the valve cover and turn the flywheel so the engine is at top dead center, then adjust the 'taps' on the cam holder for the .006" gap.
