Hello all, I'm new here but I'm having trouble with my jonway YY50QT scooter. The problem is it started sputtering and losing power as if it was out of gas. I checked the filter and lines and they are clean, I changed the spark plug and most recently swapped out the carb (I have two). I got it started and went for a test ride to the local store about 1-11/2 miles from my house and it started the sputtering again and just stopped on me I had it wide open, but it just died like it was not getting fuel again and would not start. I checked the gap on the plug and it's fine, I'm at the end of my rope what else can I do to get it running again? Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I am not a two stroke expert but did you check out the reed valve when the carb was off?

I am not a two stroke expert but did you check out the reed valve when the carb was off? Yes I did it looked fine to me not discolored or anything but then again this is my 1st time working on a scooter. What is it I should be looking for? I tried to start it this morning and nothing it turns over I can here compression but still no joy. Thanks or your reply

Exhaust is not plugged I assume. No cracked gasket or missing case bolts? Plug is getting spark and is not wet is it.

The exhaust is old and was a little loose I tightened that up one bolt is missing the welds on the muffler are broke and it shakes a little. Which gaskets should I check? if it's the exhaust gasket I have not checked it and all bolts are in place the only thing I have taken apart so far is the carb. The plug is not wet I checked for spark by removing it and try to start while looking at the plug sometimes it sparked other times it didn't (this has happened before) the plug wire has some missing rubber on the end where the plug connects I can see it spark from the sides if i hold it near the crack case not sure if that is a factor or not but no spark if I don't. That has happened before, I just left it alone for awhile and one day out of boredom put a charge on the battery and it started and ran fine with no problem until now.

Spark coming and going may mean a problem with the cdi or a coil.

Resolve your spark issue first it's cdi coil plug cap or wire
If you still have the issue and your sure it's fuel if the tank sits higher then the carb your vacuum petcock aka fuel shut off valve is bed replace it with a manual one and cap the vacuum line if the tank is below the carb it's your pump

jmkjr72 I replaced the plug and it started right up and ran pretty good. it sputters still a little but it does't die on me. I'm gonna start upgrading both of them (that are both jonway) anyway but for now I'll replace the cdi. I just wanted to get some pointers because one just hit 3,000 miles and the other (been using for spare parts) is close to 3,000 also. I live GA and the part of town I live in the closest store is a 1-1/2 mile walk round trip with steep hills and my scooter is very important. I ride just about everyday and I can average 15-20 miles one way or more sometimes and I know that is rough on a 49cc engine with the hills that I have to ride up and down. I lose speed like crazy if I'm doing say 40-45mph by the time I reach the top of the hill I'm down to like 20-30 mph and the folks here in GA are not known for patience on the streets. I want to get more hp from my engine and I was unsure if I should replace the engine with one with more hp(obviously) or should I just get a kit that I can install the get more hp. Like I said I have two scooters. My plan is to completely rebuild the spare bike, strip it down to the frame and use it as a "prototype" of sorts with high performance and/or racing parts,I mean everything I can wires, engine, lights, tires, etc. I found a website scooterdomain.com and it has a pretty good selection and the prices are not bad either, but having said all that I just wanted to here from someone who has more experience and know how to give me a little nudge in the right direction. Thanks for the help.

Jmkrjr knows what he is talking about, has a lot of 2t experience.
Fyi, these Chinese scooters usually have a minarelli motor and a lot of upgrades are out there. You can make them run very strong.
After checking out the yy 50 qt are you sure it is not a 4 stroke? If it is a four stroke you can still get a big bore kit, high performance variator, free flow intake and exhaust, ported and polished head. For the same money you could get a 150cc scooter.

Hey Rebel, To be honest I'm asumming I have a 2 stroke but I'm not sure how can I find out for sure I've seen alot of things online and the parts look the same for a 2 stroke and the 4. I can work on cars, but this is new ground to me so mechanically I can do it just not sure on how to tell the diff between the two engine types.

Take a couple pics of the motor and post them here, we will be able to tell. For a fifty first thing I would do for performance is just put lighter weights in the variator, something like a 4.5 or 5 gram set of weights.

Oh, o. Two stroke you have an oil tank you got to fill for fuel, or pre mix gas and oil. Four stroke no mixing of gas and oil.

ok another update. I changed the CDI and still had the same problem changed the coil and I noticed my headlight started working again for some reason awhile back it would only work on hi beam. I take it for a test run and I think I got it fixed I rode close to the house (just in case I had to push it home) for 15-20min about the same amount of ride time I would get before it started sputtering and would die and it seems to be holding up fine. Thanks for all the help. I started stripping down my other scooter I'll post some pics in the next few days. Thanks again I have learned alot in the past few days.
