I just bought a sb50 it had not been run in 4 years as per the last owner but was running when parked. I got it home every thing was clean and worked starter, fuel vslve, auto bystarter (choke), and oil pump. So I put a small amount of gas in the tank which had hardly no rust in it upon visual inspection. Turned the key on kicked it twice and it started up nicely and ran great. A week later it started back firing or popping and had little power and now it won't start I have fuel, fire, compression with a no start condition, using kick starter or electric starter. I even tried using starting fluid to get it running with no success. As far as I can tell there is no suction at the carb inlet. The carb has been cleaned, oil injector does work according to oil level in resivoir, reeds are good, new intake gaskets, new standard spark plug (bpr6hsa - ngk) and 140 psi compression. What am I missing here

Could someone verify my check of the timing. Piston at top dead center with the mark on the flywheel aligned with mark on crank case. I'm assuming this means that the flywheel key is ok

Normally a no suck is reeds it could be a blown crank seal or bad base gasket
Not sure about the timing marks on a Honda

When I take reed assembly out are reeds supposed to be flat and closed or slightly open

They should be sealed tight any chips is bad any gap means they aren't closing

I downloaded the manual. Pics of reed valve aren't too clear. My reed valve is flat no chips or deterioration. At the point now where I'm thinking break it completely down and get new seals and gaskets all way around. That way I know I fixed the problem. Any one know if I can still get seals for a 88 sb50. I found a site in london with parts but they don't have seals and don't have most gaskets.

It might be a bit hard to find seals for a motor that old but Honda may just be using the same parts on something else today. Give your local Honda dealer a call and ask them or go to one of the online motorcycle parts dealers that sell Honda parts and see if they offer them.
