Hello All, Noob here, been working on motorcycles for a bit, I have not seen this coming off the exhaust pipe on any motorcycle. It comes directly off the exhaust pipe as seen, the silver lil box has like a reed valve in it and really only allows air one way. There is a breather tube that is about 12 inches long that is covered by the spring coil as can be seen. I believe it is the culprit for a backfire. It's not my scooter just trying to help a friend out. He said it has always backfired from the day he got it. It backfires through the exhaust. I have it because he was having issues with it starting and staying running. This is a Chinese knockoff of a Honda Ruckus. What I have done to date: Cleaned carb, adjusted the air/fuel mixture as factory is usually set at sea level etc, we are at around 4300 feet above sea level. Adjust the valve clearance. New Spark plug and gapped it. It purs like a kitten, however it still backfires on deceleration from high rpm's. I plugged the breather tube off of this exhaust piece and no backfire. I don't believe that plugging this for an extended period would create issues down the road, but just would like some feedback from anyone around. Thanks

Sorry it is a GY6 150cc clone. It is pretty identical to the GY6 150cc motor.

If thatbreather tube goes to the air box or open air is the air intake for the cat converter leave it plugged too long and it will plug the pipe

So if I am understanding your post correct? The exhaust has essentially two pipes, one with this air breather going directly into the CAT? Then the exhaust around that? I guess the question is does that breather go directly to the CAT or does it just feed air into the exhaust like a car to "lower" emmisions? If so, then why would the backfiring stop and go away if this line is plugged? It in a sense creates an exhaust leak creating the backfire? ? ?

It is new to me. I think I would just remove it an plug the hole.

Your thinking oncars is wrong But it does the same thing as on cars It feeds fresh air in to help the converter get hot enough to burn the crap off If the back fires stop when you plug it your reeds arent sealing right allowing the air to go out instead of come in

I have the same problem and am going to plug the tube. It seems that the tube would be a source for fresh oxygen which then ignites unburnt gas in the exhaust. Cheers, Malcolm.

If the new exhaus t doesn't have a port you remove I t and plug the hole where it pulls air from the air box

My exhaust system has fallen apart inside and everything in it is in a big pile on the ground having cut it open to see what was rattling around inside, I found everything was rattling! welded the thing back together now could I do anything with the insides, no cat, not interior pipes etc all now gone. Engine does not sound any louder to be honest well not much but I want to replace it but it has a rubber hose attached from the engine somewhere which I am told might be causing other issues but cannot find a replacement anywhere? Any pointers anyone? I am not sure what this pipe does!

I would block it off on both ends of where the hose attaches.

i think its a breather, excess fumes from the engine will be expelled to the muffler and get burned.. , in cars on the other hand, that tube is attached to the air box.,fumes being sucked inside the engine and expelled to the muffler..hmmmm bizarre
i miss you Rich (sad face)
