I guess I forgot to mention the plate on it says it is carb approved. I am hoping that will hold true. I also may be able to register it because it is not new, used vehicles can come into Calif if they have enough miles on them and get registered, this one has enough to qualify I think.

Good luck with it. I love those silver JCL, Rocketa, Jonway Linhia powered Reflex lookalikes. My girls got one exactly to the letter like it.It's a JCL MP250A. Tons of crap went wrong with it while it was still brand new. I think Killermotorsports bought a bunch of 2007s that were rejects from China. No PDI would have prevented a bad ignition switch, starter clutch gave up at 500 miles, Valves go out of adjustment every 1000 miles and then chronic stalling. There was a couple of other things too un PDI related. Oohhh... this thing is fun ! . Ya know though, I still love that scooter for some reason. It is the best looking Chinese scooter made IMHO. It gets 65+ mpg consistently. And accelerates strong for a 257cc scoot. I am glad your freebe was way over on the west side of US where I feel I didn't miss anything though , me being in FL. .lol The best of luck to you. Yours will probably be better. This thing must have had the mark of the Beaste on it. lol

Well, I finally got the motor out of the scooter today. It was actually an easier job than I expected. Now I need to decide if I am just going to do a stock rebuild, or pump up the power a bit.

Ok I will upgrade something. Looked like it needed a air filter replced so I will at leat put a unifilter on it, I was thinking about porting and polishing the head. A nice new exhaust would look good. I really don't think a big bore kit will go in it.

I started pulling the motor apart. The top end looks great. The chamber is very clean there is no ridge in the top of the cylinder at all. The piston has no carbon build up on it, just a coating of black.
The bottom end I am expecting to find som problems. Looks like an oil failure to me.

OK, a little more here. I used about ten feet of rope in the cylinder to hold the crank still so I could get the variartor and the flywheel off the crank shaft. Worked real well doing it that way. There were ridges worn on the crank, I am nor sure it makes the crank worn out. One of the theories about what the problem was, was a bad key on the crank, it was fine. Braking this puppy loose was a challenge, it was on there tight. When in popped it made a crack that sounded as though something did break, Anyway the flywheel looked good, I was not aware that the clutch for the starter is actually on the backside of this, I'll have to check it out later. The bushing one the starter driven gear looks real rough, I will replace the entire thing, I thought I took a pic of it but guess I missed that. I was pretty happy with the way the head looked, I'll pull the valves out later and see if they look good. The cylinder looked very good, no ridge at all

I should have taken a few more pictures. If anybody has anything to let me know about these please chime in, this is my first water cooled bike motor. I did test it for play on the crank but pushing, pulling and wiggling the piston, seemed to be a little loose to me. I was wondering if the play in the oil pump drive chain was too much. For piece of mind, the chain, gear and pump will be replaced anyway.

if you have valves out, it would be good to replace them, as they often warp, ncy makes some good valve action parts, a more lively valve spring makes for a better everything.
great pics by the way

I did not like the bushing on the starter driven gear even though the starter clutch seemed fine. Last night I was looking for parts online and found a deal so that has been ordered. I was even looking at Honda parts, wow those are expensive and would put the cost of fixing above the price of just buying a used Honda Reflex on craigslist. So cheap Chinese parts it is.
NCY does sell good parts, the dealers sometimes have trouble getting the parts from them so many are very frustrated sellingparts they can not get.

OK the crank is out.
I had expected some real slop in the play on the rod journal, it moves a few thousandths of an inch and there is a little roughness in the bearing when I rolled it along the counter top, there was not anything absolutely horrible though like I expected.
I have not found what the source of the metal flakes was.
