When it comes to checking for compression I have always done the thumb test for general idea as to if there is enough compression to get it running. If the motor can't make it hard to hold it back with a thumb it is questionable.

I appreciate everyone's help on here. I went ahead and did another compression test with a friends tester and got 100psi with electric start WOT and then from there got it up to 150psi with the kick start WOT. That seems pretty low doesn't it? Is it common for there to be a big difference between kick and electric start? Its strange because it is hard to start but will still start every now and then and will get up to 32mph. Yet it sounds to me like the motor needs to be opened up.

It is strange for the difference. 100 is low 150 is well above the minimum, 120 or so and over is needed.

I thought that was strange too, and I figured 100 seemed low, even though the kick would get it to 150, so I went ahead and opened up the engine. I found that the intake valve was bad. So I just ordered the parts so I am hoping that will fix it, which I believe this time it will. I will keep you posted.

Just wanted to update....
After replacing the valves and reassembling the engine, the scooter starts up perfectly! That intake valve wasn't seating properly and was leaking. The plastic intake manifold gasket that I had been concerned about must have been causing the engine to run lean and eventually fried the valve, I'm guessing. Thanks again for everyone's help!

its hard to set a rocker that the valve stem has woen a groove in the face that makes it a replace the rocker job needless to say i enjoy a slightly noisy engine that i can hear revving with my helmet on.
if you have too much air gap on the ignition pick up

Sounds like.003 was a bit tight and you might have rounded over a your cam and stretched the timing chain lucky you didn't snap it. Thats more than likely why its so noisy. and come on pit crew these motors are not that hard that was exhausting just reading the trouble shooting if all fails it would have been way quicker and cheaper to get a new top end, cdi, and coil problem solved less than 2 hrs labor and less than 100 dollars to fix
