Hello All,
A month ago, I bought a brand new TaoTao CY-50. The guy who sold me and told me that I needed to change engine oil after the first 100km, so I did it around 130km.
Now, it has about 610km on, the 2nd light on the left on the panel starts to turn red as soon as I turn the key to ON position. What does the red light mean? Does it mean that I have to change engine oil? The red light comes on and off during the riding, too.
Also, is it important to change gear oil after the first 300KM? Is there an online instruction to show how to do it?
It is great to discover this wonderful online scooter forum. :-)
Thanks!!
Nick

Welcome to the forum
I've never been on that scooter and do not know what the red light is an indicator for. Can you post a photo? I'll do a little research and perhaps one of the other guys will know.
I'm going to post a couple links to manuals you should download, one is a generic Chinese GY6 scooter manual that will show you how to change your gear oil and a lot of other good information. The other is a service manual for general repair information.
Changing the oils is a good idea, unless you bough it from a local dealer that already changed the oils. If you ordered it online and it cam in a packing container the oil in it is really "shipping oil" not meant to use for a long time.

The C-50 come in three versions, A,B, and T3. I could not find an owners manual for any of them. The "A" looks like the 50cc version of my scooter and the only lights on the dash it has are turn signals and high beam indicator. Does your owners manual tell you what that red light is for?

Hello Rebel, Thanks so much for your prompt posts. I attached two scanned pages (page 3 and 4) from the Owner's manual. The English is pretty bad. The light that turns red is the lower light on the left side. Any idea what the red light means? (It has only been about 380km since the engine oil changed.) Thx! Nick Attachments:

If you think that English is bad, you should see the English in my scooters manual.
The second light from the left has no label, I do not really think it has anything to do with the oil. It may be a indicator that the voltage is dropping down, are you having a little trouble starting it?

The scooter starts fine. I just tested it. The thing that puzzles me is the "2. Oil changing director:" item on page 4. Is there such a light indicator that indicates engine oil must be changed? I am under the impression that the riders will just have to change it every 1000km.
Thanks for your answers!

I have never heard of a light to indicate when to change oil on one of these scooters.

I think that I found out the problem is.. It is the brake light staying on even without touching the brakes. Do you think that this is a serious problem to be fixed? The scooter is only a month old. Will it be difficult to fix it?
Thanks,
nick

Here again, I have not seen a scooter with a light in the dash to tell you the brakes are on, but I have not seen everything. If your brakes are working correctly, I would not worry about a dash board brake light too much.
If you bought it at a local dealer I would take it to them and get it fixed under warranty.

JMK and my Stella have a brake light on the dash. It means nothing aside from this. It tells you the switches are working. It's annoying.

Hi All,
I really have a bad luck with this purchase. Now, with only 1500 km mileage, the scooter is leaking gas when I tried to start it. The symptom is that the engine cranked but won't start.. then a few seconds, I saw the gas coming out of the bottom of the engine.
What do you think the cause of the problem?
I did some research online. They said that it could be the screw is lost n the carburetor drain hose. I am fairly handy, but how do I open up the bike and reach the carburetor and check it?
Thanks!

Most scooters you can take the seat off and the storage bucket under it and you should have pretty good access to the carb.
You most likely have a vacuum controlled valve on the bottom of the fuel tank, if it is suck open the carb might start leaking through the over flow.

The fix to this problem turns out to be very simple. The guy who sold me the scooter stopped by and tightened up the carb drain screw. Apparently it is very common problem for TaoTao CY-50.
There is no need to open the seat. The carb drain pipe is right below the engine and easily reachable.

I am beginning to think that these chinese scooters need to be completely checked over when you buy them to make sure everything is connected right and screwed tight
