What a memory maker!
I remember these well, as I had dreams of getting one, or, a Harley "Hummer" as a 14-year-old just before the local "moped law" changed back to 16. So... two more years, then I got a "real" Harley.
I had forgotten they were 2-strokes! I'd also forgotten just how singularly UGLY they were! I was thinking they looked more like the "styled" Cushman scoots made for Sears which looked much like fifties cars. Those were pretty attractive... still are!
After all these years, I can't even remember if the Topper was a prehistoric "twist 'n go" or had gears... at least with the 9 hp 2-stroke, it should have been pretty frisky!
As a big-bike fan for more than a half-century, the whole "twist n' go" setup is mighty foreign to me. However, it surely works, and isn't too hard to comprehend. With the popularity of our modern scoots, I'm stil wondering why nobody seems to have installed a serious snowmobile 2-stroke power-train into a cheapie Chinese scoot.
They seem so "family-related" that it would be a natural to stuff a multi-cylinder 50-100 hp+ snowmobile setup into a scoot. Should provide way over 100 mph top speed, and effortless 70 mph cruise, two up. Maybe a lot of work, but what a sweet ride it would be!
As for the Topper... Well, Harley has tried about everything over the years. Now, they're trying Chinese manufacture. Lots of luck! I'm a die-hard Hog rider and fan, but can't quite get hold of just where Harley Davidson is heading. Could be they're heading south, and that would be a shame.
