A while back my home-made performance exhaust came to pices (broken weld, and it wasn’t even mine), and I put back the original 'pipe so I still could ride. Amazingly the top end improved slightly, I had stead acceleration all the way up to about 62-63km/h which seemed to be the new top speed. However, all things must apparently come to an end and so did my engine. I had noticed that it seemed to run a little hotter than before, and was planning to put back the performance 'pipe asap. But I never find the time to weld it... After running with the original exhaust for some 3 weeks the engine suddenly developed what I can only describe as excessive valve clatter. It still starts and runs, but it doesn't sound very well at all. I suspect the exhaust valve has been damaged by the increased heat. I managed to pick up a used 139QMA with about 4000 km on it for about $70 the other week which I installed last night, so now I can at least get around again. Have to replace the clutch though, it is completely worn out. But I can use the one from my old engine... I will be tearing down the old engine to find out what happened, and maybe repair it or at least re-use some parts from it. There will be a post sometime in the future about this. I suppose the thing to learn from my experience is to never use a restricted pipe (original, unmodified) on a souped-up engine... Otto /back to the 49cc roots

An update: I've gotten the new (used 49cc) motor installed and running. Quite a bargain for $70, runs pretty smooth but I had forgotten how little power there is in these things when they are unmodified. I really need to fix the old engine and put it back in! But at least I can get around again :-)
